1/5/05 | Vegas Hot Dogs

When people talk about Cheap Eats in Vegas, it inevitably boils down to buffets, beer, or hot dogs. Well, not always but that’s the gist of it. Anyhow, I saw something on the Food Network about a place that has these gigantic hot dogs for 99 cents. I believe the place in question is Slots-A-Fun The camera films a bunch of tourists laughing and talking about these big weiners. There was some German lady going “ho-ho-ho, these hot dogs are Eeenormoose, not like where ve come from”. Geez.
Amazingly enough, I haven’t personally tried out any of the cheapo hot dog deals in Vegas though I’ve been there more than 10 times. Something about a self-preservation instinct kicking in. But I looked around the web and it seems like there are tons of hot dog cheap eats to be had out there. I don’t think I need to give any warnings about what are actually IN hot dogs because that’s been well exposed (The Jungle, etc.). Still, I think it’s ok as long as you’re not eating three a day every day:
Slots a Fun: 99 cent gigantic hot dog. I think this is the place that I saw on Food Network but I can’t be entirely sure about that.
Lady Luck: I think I’ve actually seen this special, though I was too intimidated to try it out. Beer and a hot dog for 99 cents. That is just sick cheap eats. If you get the same thing at a baseball game, it will run you about $8.00 …
Gold Coast: Vendor cart hot dog only at the sports book. I don’t know about eating a hot dog out of cart, or even any hot food out of a cart. Around downtown L.A., there are always these crazy hot dog cart dudes running around selling hot dogs with grilled onions and the smell is mouthwatering. I’ve never been brave enough though. Maybe someday.
Westward Ho: I’ve heard some good things about the “Mega-Dog” that they serve there. It’s actually a buck fifty but is crazy large at about a foot and a half long. Supposedly it weighs in at 3/4 of a pound. That’s sure to weigh you down. Served at “The Deli”…
Riviera Don’t know too much about this one, but supposedly it is a 3/4 pound dog for only a buck but you need some sort of coupon to get that price. You can find them at a place called Nickel Town at the Riviera.

I think I’ve been to the Gold Spike b4, but I didn’t check the deli there at the time. Cool, more cheap “mystery meat” to try next time I head out there!

You have to try the hotdogs at the Boardwalk on the Strip. They are foot long and only $0.99, they also have maragritas, shrimp cocktail and nachos for $0.99. If you lose your money gambling, this is the place to eat cheap.

Melissa - cool, I’ve never really hung out too much at the Boardwark but I guess now I have a reason to check it out. And I really like nachos too (man, which is worse, dogs or nachos?)

Now wait just a doggone minute! As one who admits to residing in Sin City I have to remind our occasional visitor that cheap eats and free drinks are as plentiful as buttons on a slot machine in Vegas. It’s a decades-old tradition that works much the same way as trolling for suckerfish: The House baits the hook with an assortment of tantilizing worms in the form of hot dogs, shrimp, Jack Daniels or beautiful, scantily-clad cocktail waitresses. Then you, the unsuspecting prey from Omaha or Topeka, start to become disoriented, unable to fathom how such goods and services can be delivered to the consumer for little or no cost. At that point, you have effectively been netted and are flopping around on the floor, having just doubled- down on your sixteen against the dealers ten.
Hope to see you all back here again soon! Your 99 cent hot dog is waiting.

Jesse - S’ok.. As long as we out-of-towners don’t lose our shirts playing slots and have an enjoyable time overall, I don’t mind paying the Sin City piper a bit. That’s entertainment. And if I can find some cheap filler food, which as you said is plentiful, all the better! =)

The Westward Ho dog can be had with chili for a nominal charge. There’s also 99 cent margaritas, in any flavor as long as it’s lime( price may have changed, haven’t been there in 5 or 6 years).

Being a regular customer of the Gold Coast vendor a few years back (when I worked there), let me just put a huge stamp of approval on hot dogs served from a cart. The same type of vendors can be found outside the sportsbooks of all of Coast Resort’s casinos (Barbary Coast, Orleans, G.C. & Suncoast) so visitors AND locals can take advantage.
They aren’t footlong, but they were .50 each. Excellent, tasty meal.

The BEST hot dog in Las Vegas is definitely Slots A Fun. I have tried hot dogs at numerous places and it is the best. You can also get a margarita for a dollar . Don’t forget the shrimp cocktail while you are there. FYI, the dog is no longer 99 cents. I was there earlier this year and they raised the price. Try one ,you will love it.

tim - for 50 cents each i’ll just buy two and stick ‘em end to end to equal a foot…
sharon - that’s too bad it’s no longer 99 cents. How much is it up to now?

If you want a big hotdog the Plaza downtown has one that is 1/2 lb and with chili and cheese it is only 2.50 it has a great flavor and you will have a hard time eating all of it. Try it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I work at the South Coast Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. We too have the .50 Hot Dogs. They are served from a cart in the Sports Book. They are very tasty and are all beef. They are the only ones I will eat at a casino.
