Coke Is ItThe 900 pound gorilla that is Coke was a shoe-in for winning the Favorite Soda Poll. I don’t know if you’re old enough to remember the Pepsi Challenge that they used to have outside of supermarkets many years ago. They’d basically blindfold you and ask you to drink from a cup of Pepsi and a cup of Coke. Then they’d ask you to pick which one you liked better.

My cousin and her friends took the challenge and she said it was kind of funny how nearly ALL of them picked Coke, after which the people running the challenge became extremely rude and basically told them to “move along”. Funny, but typical. Anyhow, going by taste alone I’m a Coke guy myself, and I really like their newer additions, Vanilla Coke and Lime Coke. I hope these don’t go “out of print” like their earlier forays into non-classic style colas.

Soda Poll

It’s no surprise that Pepsi lost to Coke in the poll, but what I’m a bit more surprised is how WELL that Dr. Pepper did in nearly beating out Pepsi. Dr. Pepper is a bit of a love it or hate it deal, at least with people I know. I actually like Dr. Pepper a lot and will generally choose it over Classic Coke when given a chance. However, many people I know liken the taste to “medicine” or cough syrup.

Mountain Dew, our good old nuclear green-yellow friend, brought up the rear unsurprisingly. Apparently, “doing the Dew” is not the best slogan in the world. I get that confused with “doing doo-doo” which is an altogether different slogan, hehe. I felt their commercials were pretty lame. But then, there aren’t too many good soda commercials as it is… they all seem to want to show lame untalented pop stars. I’m sure someone will write to prove me wrong. Just don’t get me started on American Idol…

The new poll up at the top of the page is for your favorite chips. I was going to have an “other” category, and then I just decided to hell with it. I’m going to make you pick one of the four… Doritos, Cheetos, Lays, or Pringles.

I tried the pepsi challenge in my class (I wanted to see what stundents would choose when branding was removed) and everybody chose coke.

That sort of squashed my theory that people prefer coke due to marketing.

  2. Ayesha97 Says:

ACK! Don’t make us choose ….. Doritos, Cheetos, Lays, or Pringles.

(wait- are the Lays baked or original? and what flavor?)

When I tried the Pepsi Challenge in my local mall, I told the administratrix that one is Coke, the other is Pepsi, and I like the Coke the best. She lifted up the barrier and I, of course, was right. I’m thinking the people who chose Pepsi were those who never drank soda anyway. No real soda drinker could ever confuse the two.

Hmm, chips, which should I choose? Cheetos is out - it leaves my hands orange. There are better corn chips than Doritos, so throw that one out. Pringles are too expensive and they sometimes taste a little funny - but they are cleaner. Lays are thin and crispy and - this important - they taste great with sour cream and onion dip. Guess I have to go with the Lays.

  4. Bottom Feeder Says:

I can’t stand either coke or pepsi. Or Dr Pepper, or Mt Dew, frankly. Actually, I pretty much stick to either Root Beer or Fresca. I do love a nice cold fresca.

Lays for me on the chips. They are a dipping chip, and chips are mostly about the dip, anyway.

  5. jodie Says:

Have you tried the new Coke Zero? It’s coke sweetened with splenda, i think (or some other fake sweetener). It has zero calories, fat, carbs, and sugar. It dosen’t have the chemically nasty taste of diet coke, though. I can hardly taste a difference! I like it even better than Coke!

  6. Cheap Eats Editor Says:

Editrix - that’s cool you did it in your class.

Ayesha - the Lays can be any kind you want =)

Tim - did she tell you to “get lost” after choosing Coke or was she nice about it? I totally agree with you about identification of the soda… I mean I’d think most people would be able to tell them “this one is Coke and this one is Pepsi, and I like this one better”. So its not so much a blind “which one tastes better”.

Both doritos and cheetos make my hands cheesy. I had a friend who would slightly smash them in the bag and then eat them with a large spoon but I suppose that takes the fun out of the chips. =)

Bottom - I actually don’t like root beer that much, except in an ice cream float. As for Fresca, I can roll with the grapefruit flavor; thats’ very nice. But the thing I absolutely can’t stand is fake sugar, whether spenda, saccharin, nutrasweet, etc. That leaves this yucky aftertaste in my mouth that makes me want to barf…

Jodie - See above… I think Splenda is the least offensive of the bunch, but I still cannot stand anything with artificial sweetener in it. In fact, the only diet soda in our fridge is from people who brought it over 2 years ago. It is weird, I actually have the reverse problem of a lot of people, I can’t seem to keep the weight ON. I need all the carbs, sugar, and fat I can get. I haven’t tried the Coke Zero but I guess I should, because I’m willing to try everything at least once.

  8. tim otero Says:

Cheap, she didn’t tell me to get lost. She kind of just stood there in stunned silence while my brothers and I started laughing.

side note: one of these days, I’m gonna have to learn to post without using the word “I”

  9. Cheap Eats Editor Says:

Haha, that is hilarious! It’s weird, I would think that would happen more frequently, where the person being tested would immediately know which was which…

  10. Spider Says:

How can anyone vote for ANYTHING but Lays. Like a fresh Butterfinger, nothing is any better than opening the bag of Lays and munching. The become very average after the bag is open but the first ones out of the bag - WOW!

Maybe that is why I eat the entire bag when I open it… that or I am just a pig…

  11. Cheap Eats Editor Says:

Spider - I hear you on the Lays… I have had 1/2 to full bag munching episodes frequently. Well, just about any type of chip (barring sweet potato chips) is an endangered species in my house…

  12. tim otero Says:

    Cheap, how about cow chips?

  13. Cheap Eats Editor Says:

    Weylllll… then I stand slightly corrected! =)

  14. Jake Says:

I missed the previous poll, but I am a Dr. Pepper fan all the way. I am trying to watch the lbs and the new Coke Zero hits the spot. Diet Dr. Pepper can no longer make the claim that they taste most like the original. Diet Coke sucks

On the chip front, if you were to ask me when I was a kid, it would have been cheetos all hte way, and Lays, well I can eat just one easily, never cared for them. Doritos, eh…. the winner:

Pringles (The only non Frito-Lay product too)

  15. Cheap Eats Editor Says:

jake - I really do like Dr. Pepper. It is always good to hear from someone who’s a fan of it too… so this new Coke Zero is intriguing. I don’t like Diet Coke too, there is one can in my fridge that someone on a diet brought over once. It has been there for 9 months. But I have been bamboozled previously by diet drinks that claim not to have the “aftertaste”. So far haven’t had one that’s stood up. But I’m always willing to try anything once. (Except Cow Chips, Tim) So now I just have to convince my parents to try buy a six pack of Coke Zero so I can mooch one off them for a taste test…
