8/16/05 | Albertson’s Vanilla Soda
[ Currently Eating: Potato Salad Sandwich ]
Sorry, I haven’t been updating lately with yummy Cheap Eats posts. I also haven’t had as much time to cook lately which is why you haven’t seen any “recipes” for awhile. And it’s a lot quicker to put together a Cheap Eats product review than a Cheap Eats recipe…
I’ve actually temporarily run out of interesting cheap food products to review, but here is one that I’ve kept on the back burner for awhile. You might remember in the Generic Soda post I had actually given Albertson’s Black Cherry Soda an OK mark of 5/10. Well, here is it’s brother: Albertson’s Vanilla Soda and unfortunately it didn’t do as well.
Carbonation of the generic soda was a problem with the Generic Black Cherry soda… open it and re-cap it for a day, and you lost all the fizz! The same is true with this Vanilla Soda. But whereas the black cherry soda at least had an unusual, albeit artificial flavor, the vanilla soda tasted just plain awful.
I actually had some cans of Vanilla Coke left over from a 4th of July buying spree so I got to taste them side by side with the Albertson’s Brand. The results were not good news for the generic soda. The Albertson’s soda was extremely bland and what little “vanilla” flavor tasted remarkably like paint thinner. To say it had an off taste is an understatement. It was so off, it was awful, hehe.
I think the worst part of it was the strange metallic aftertaste that seemed to linger in my mouth for a half an hour after I drank a glass. This is in a plastic bottle mind you, not in a can. The Vanilla Coke, which came from a can, actually had little metallic taste to it. I don’t know why this plastic liter bottle should impart any sort of weird metal flavoring to he soda. Weird.
So, I gotta give it a lower score because of its failure in taste. This is one good example of “you get what you pay for”… even though this particular bottle happened to be a freebee from a coupon.
Cheap Eats Score: 2/10

Vanilla Max Cola? That’s the blandest name for a soda. At least Safeway takes the actual soda name and tweaks it to something like Mountain Breeze or Dr. Skipper. I think you should lower the score to 1, just because of the name.

marvo - you are correct on that one. Albertson’s calls a lot of their products “Max” which I think is pretty lame. It would be cooler if they called them “To The Max”… haha. Vanilla Cola to the Max, brah…
