2/27/06 | Kroger Corn Bitz
[ Currently Eating: Early Morning Coffee ]
Now that I’m getting up a lot earlier due to being on a much different time schedule (try up at 6:30am, bed at 11:00pm instead of 10:30am – 2:00am), I actually find that if I don’t eat breakfast in the morning I tend to fall asleep at the keyboard by ten or so.
I’m not a morning person, so I never understood those people who claimed to love getting up at 6 in the morning, going for a jog and then having breakfast by 7 am. But amazingly, the breakfast thingy is sort of working out. Energy in the morning? Amazing. So you might be seeing more breakfast related things here on Cheap Eats.
Like these Kroger brand Corn Bitz. This store-brand “toasted corn cereal” is basically a wannabe version of the popular Chex brand cereal from General Mills. You know – the cereal that everyone uses to make those Chex Holiday mixes and then try pass it off as their “main dish” at potlucks. I’m kidding… I like Chex Party Mix.
I had some serious doubts about the generic version of Chex. But it was fairly cheap for this full size box, around $2 or so. So we picked it up to try out.

As far as looks and texture goes, Corn Bitz, is pretty much the same as Chex. Crunchy, crosshatched yellow corn bits that are hollow inside. I was actually expecting there to be more than a few “casualties of war” in the box… that is, smashed up Corn Bitz. Surprisingly, the damage was minimal with most of the corn soliders quite intact.
As far as taste goes, there’s not much to be said about plain corn cereal and milk. It’s OK. It tastes like what you’d expect Corn Chex to taste like with milk… boring but fairly wholesome. I thought it might have an off taste, or get more soggy in milk than normal Chex. But it held up pretty well and tasted no different.
Granted, I didn’t have them side by side so maybe there is a difference. But I can’t imagine it’d be THAT different. And if I remember correctly Chex mix is quite a bit more expensive. This box of Corn Bitz was enormous too… I just threw out the empty box and forgot to check the weight on the box. But it felt like it was bigger than the average box.
As expected, though the Corn Bitz fared decently for breakfast their real value came as between meal munchies. These are great to pour in a bowl and snack on while watching certain U.S. Snowboarders flub their gold medals, yesirree…

My favorite part about the store brand cereals is the names they come up with to be similar to the name brand, but legally different enough to get away with it!

jude – Oh totally true, hehe… that would be why you see a lot of those Zs replacing Ss on generic brands.

I’m not much of a breakfast person but I do like Malt-O-Meal cereal. Chances are they have a spinoff of your childhood favorite. Well, unless said favorite happens to be Cookie Crisp– they don’t make a maltomeal version of it.
Cookie Crisp is the best cereal on the planet BTW. It is the Nestle Crunch Bar of the morning bowl. Paired with whole milk and a spoon, you combine the mixture and let it sit for about a minute. The little cookies suck up some of that milk and start to get just oh so soft but yet retain their crunchy goodness…
I want some Cookie Crisp now

shawn – Cookie Crisp! that brings back a lot of memories, mostly of my aunt/uncle’s house. The reason being is that we didn’t get to eat sweet cereal for breakfast when I was younger… but when we went over to our relatives they always had some. So you can imagine that I really liked eating breakfast over there!
I also remember having malt-o-meal, though I was never very fond of it…

I was never that fond of milk & cereal, though I like eating plain cereals – including the “Chex” cereals. (That, and making Chex Mix.)
I wasn’t allowed sugared cereals either as a kid … you can believe that my first year at college I made a complete pig of myself at the cereal bar in the dorm cafeteria.
Now I’ve got a hankering for some Cap’n Crunch.

My mom always bought Chex and we’d add a teaspoon of sugar to it. Yum!
