5/15/08 | McD So. Chicken Sandwich
[ Currently Eating: Tasty Air ]

Yep, two posts in one day again (I just moved the lemonade one forward in time so that it’s first). I seem to always catch these promotions at the last minute. This one is not so good anyhow, because you have to buy a drink. They call it “free”.
It’s already too late to get the biscuit breakfast sandwich, but for the rest of today (Thurs May 15, 2008) you can get a free Southern Style Chicken Sandwich at McDonald’s when you buy a medium or large drink.
I was wondering, what is it that makes this a “Southern Style” sandwich, is it just the coating on the chicken? Or is it the pickles?

More importantly what makes it different from the McChicken. maybe it is the pickles and lack of slimy mayo and lettuce. Whatever it is…I will pass on my free Sandwich with purchase of drink…which would cost more than if I just bought the sandwich. McDonald’s…once again thinks the American consumer is a fool. Ok so maybe we are…but that is not the point.

I would rather pay for a chikfila sandwich than eat this thing for free.

I did this today and it only set me back $1.37 because I got a medium drink and I did not succumb to idea that it is necessary to get fries while at McDonalds. It was yummy. I have no idea what made it “southern” though. I’d do this again for dinner, but I have heard it has about a bazillion calories/grams of fat, so I think I’m good for the rest of the month.

I think it’s just a take off on a Chick-Fil-A sandwich. Many parts of the country don’t have Chick-Fil-A, so it’s not a bad idea. I think the sandwich by itself is $2.99 (or so), so it is a deal to use the coupon if you want to give it a try.

I’m from Charlottesville, Virginia, and until a month ago, the MacDonald’s around here all offered a chicken biscuit for $1 on their breakfast menu. The dollar chicken biscuit was pulled sometime in April and replaced with a $1.99 “southern-style” chicken biscuit. Guess what? It was the same damn thing, just $0.99 more.

Mrs.QSPA-
What McDonald’s do you frequent where a soda costs upwards of 2.50?
I am just curious, so I can take pictures of this phenomenon and post them in my “things that are so ridiculous they must not be true” blog.

Hmm, it was free ice coffee day today at Dunkin Donuts too! Unfortunately I didn’t hear about this deal because I’m not really a coffee fan.

The “southern style” is definitely just because they are copying Chick-Fil-A. Though I have not had one, I have read comparison reviews, and the McDonald’s version has not gotten as good of reviews as Chick-Fil-A.

For some reason I thought this chicken biscuit and sandwich were on the dollar menu…I was unaware they had taken it off and jacked the price up to 1.99!!! BLASPHEMY…I tell you. Normally something being labeled as Southern made it cheaper…not more expensive!

Meh. I got coupons for these in the mail. One free, no purchase necessary. I tried the biscuit one this morning, but snagged an orange juice as well because of the usual salt content of this sort of thing.
Never having had Chick-Fil-A, I figured they were just ripping off KFC. Salty fried chicken patty in a biscuit. Nothing else. It *was* kind of moist, so I’m guessing it was marinated somewhere along the way. I don’t think I need battered, deep-fried chicken for breakfast ever again.

not bad, i picked some up, and they tasted OK for their price with the soda. I can tell you from experience that most mcdonalds didn’t honor this with their sweet tea for $1 promo. I can also tell you how many stores were NOT ready to discount all these stupid things by their employees. I work for the support company that they call when they have problems with their registers & other equipment, and we were swamped all day long

I ate one of these and I felt sluggish for the rest of my day. The salt and fat content are astronomical.

I tried both sandwiches.. and both were rather…blah.. the biscuit one was dry and the other one was just…ok.. not particularly crunchy or flavorful.. I’ll stick to McChickens on the dollar menu or wait til Chick-Fil-A comes to town.

I actually like these. They are indeed very similar to a Chick-Fil-A sandwich, although not quite as good. They are a LOT cheaper than CFA!
And yes, the reason they are called “southern style” is because they are similar to the CFA sandwiches. They are not just a McChicken without the lettuce and tomato. They have thicker chicken with a softer breading. McChicken are dry and have a thick, crunchy batter with lettuce and tomato. Southern style chicken sandwiches are jucier and have a thinner breading and are served with pickles. They are perfect with just pickles and mayonnaise.

I actually like it, especially compared to other options at McDonald’s. My preference is to order it with mayonnaise, since it’s quite plain as is. Not bad at all!
