12/19/08 | New Poll: Chili

[ Currently Eating: Cran Oatmeal ]

As I sit here typing this, it’s 50 degrees in my room. Yep, winter has come to Southern Cal. My parents were stuck in Vegas (oh noes, how boring) because the roads into Los Angeles were closed due to SNOW. Now if it would only snow in the city, I’d be very happy.

Cheap Eats is going to be taking a little holiday break until the new year. Two reasons – we’re going on vacation, and I need to rest up the ever-present, un-healable, irreversible SHOULDER-BACK issue. This thing has not been healed by a long shot. Will probably get some needles stuck in it at some time again.

Anyhow, before I went into hibernation I decided to at least change out the poll to give people something to talk about. Our last poll – ugh, I don’t even want to talk about it. The new poll is about Chili (since it’s so “chilly” outside, haha). I know there’s some strong opinions about it out there. I make it quite often. Myself, I like beans in it. But I’d be interested to see what everyone thinks. Texans – no need to vote twice… I already know how you feel =)

Happy holidays everyone!

Total northern girl here. Did not grow up eating chili. I will eat chili anyway you give it to me: spicy (but not too much, since I can’t take spicy in general), not, beans, no beans, as a soup, as a dip, as a frito pie, with tostitos… whatever.

IF IT TASTES GOOD, I WILL EAT IT. :)

Chili is good but you have to have corn bread with it. just enough spice to give it a bite not enough to cut your tongue out over. beans are a must have and plenty of hamburger. but the corn bread is a must especially if it is to spicy

For my homemade chili, I like cubed meat instead of ground. I am also pro-beans. I want it ladled over a big hunk of corn bread then cheddar sprinkled over the top. Mmm. Glad it’s almost lunch time (here in PA where we passed chilly months ago and have proceeded into casserole weather)!

I don’t even understand chili with no beans. And I’ve never heard of chili without meat. Meat and beans for me!

And, what was wrong with the last poll? I’d be curious to find out the results!

Frito Pie is the ultimate chili recipe: chili, fritos, cheese, onions, i make em for football parties and i can feed six people for under ten bucks… which is awesome. Plus it tastes awesome (i just wish i could find canned chili that was hot enough)

rarely have it without beans, and once used ground turkey… but i prefer with beans eating it strait… or without beans when making chili fries, burgers, dogs, etc.

My mom makes chili with ground hamburger and beans. No onions or cheese though. Which is good. When it’s time to eat we usually add crackers and ketchup. Yes you heard me right KETCHUP! It is delicious!

One time she didn’t have chili beans so she used bbq baked beans. That added a whole new yummy twist to it.

My mom also makes a pretty good green chili with pork. Green chili is pretty common here in Colorado. I had a friend come in from Maryland who had never heard of the stuff. It’s funny how food is like that.

Hope you had a great holidays! Here’s wishing you and all your loved ones a wonderful 2009! Cheers!

I’m all for chili of every variety- meat, no meat, beans, no beans. I’ve made them all. But, just recently I tried the all bean recipe from the frugal issue of Bon Appetit- vegetarian chili with orange and cumin- and it was great. And cheap. And mostly all from my pantry. Three things that are important to me mid-winter.
