Twinkie - Cheap Eats at Bloglander

You may have heard lately about the maker of Twinkies having just emerged fresh from bankruptcy protection. Yep, Interstate Bakeries, parent company of the Hostess brand had earlier tanked due to Atkins-crazy diet nutsos. (I can say that now, right? The Atkins diet was idiotic when everyone at my work was practicing it, and it’s still idiotic today.)

One of the good (or at least interesting) things to come out of it - they introduced Twinkie Bites. These follow the “burger buddies” concept - three mini twinkies in one pack. Each rinky-dink twinkie has only 33 calories. They also come in a Strawberry cupcake variety.

This sounds much better than eating a hamburger without the bread. Sorry, idiot friends, just have to rub it in more.

I haven’t bought any Twinkie Bites yet, but it’s on my list of “So Bad It’s Good” Food To Review. One thing I wish they would do is revert the filling of the Twinkies to a banana flavor. That would make me buy some right away - although it would make the monkeys living in my backyard slightly harder to control.

    oh those look delish~

i can never understand how depriving yourself of carbs made you a healthier person…. eh to each his own i suppose

I agree that the Atkins people are stupid. Who wants a hamburger without cheese and bread? Or chicken without the skin!? Crazy people! lol

PS I’ve been reading your blog for a while now. I love it! :)

My issue with Atkins (and low carbs in general) is if you’re an athlete, you’re doing yourself some harm not providing carbs to your body for energy.

I can’t wait to see your review on these! Twinkies sort of make me cringe but then I don’t like cake really. There’s a huge 100 calorie packs!!! trend going on right now so I’m not surprised Twinkie jumped on the wagon.

Hamburgers without bread were ridiculous, without a doubt. But I don’t think the basic premise is bad- you want to lose weight, cut out the junk food. Since junk food is mainly carbs, almost any diet will be “low carb” so some extent. Not that I could ever do that, I love sweets too much.

@peterpark, @brook - the people I knew on the diet were very serious about the no carbs, it was almost disturbing.

@andrea - I saw a show somewhere on this competitive runner who was vegan(?), the type that only eats natural food. They did this one run where they just collapsed. I dunno how they could even run at all on that kind of diet.

@holly - I think so too, the general idea of carb moderation might have been good. I think it just got perverted into something that just didn’t seem healthy at all. But people always want a simple “yes/no” solution instead of something that requires thinking about what you eat.
