4/26/05 | House of Reuben

[ Currently Eating: ]

SandwichThe Detroit Free Press has a popular column by Matt Helms about Cheap Eats. This article he wrote was on a place in Detroit called “House Of Reuben”. I looked everywhere for a picture of the House of Reuben but couldn’t find one so you’ll have to be content with a borrowed pic of a Reuben Sandwich. Anyhow, I have a soft spot for diners and while sit-down restaurants are always more expensive (because of tip, drinks not coming with meals, etc.) I’m often willing to sacrifice just a teeny bit of dough if it’s a good enough diner setting with good enough food. This one sounds pretty good, though it’s all the way in Michigan. They feature Reuben Sandwiches, as the name implies.

3/29/05 | Tim Horton’s

Tim Horton'sIt’s nice to see other people talking about Cheap Eats. Matt Helms from the Detroit Free Press wrote a short piece on the Tim Horton’s doughnut and fast food chain. This must be another one of those East Coast things (akin to something like the love for Dunkin’ Donuts that I experienced in Boston) because I’ve never heard of Tim Horton’s. It seems as if the chain is actually part of Wendy’s International Inc. and there are currently over 500 locations, though none near me.

Denver Post columnist Kristen Browning-Blas wrote up something on a place called Fontano’s in Denver that sells cheap subs. Apparently they are really authentic or something. Here is a quote:

For those who haven’t experienced the squishy wonder of oregano-bathed roast beef and grilled peppers on a jus-soaked baguette, Fontano’s offers an authentic introduction … With prosciuttini, capicola (gabagool, if you’re Tony Soprano), Genoa salami and provolone, the Wiseguy keeps it in the family ($5 for a 6-inch, $6.35, 8-inch, $7.85, 10-inch, same for almost all sandwiches on the menu).

Authentic sub eating? Maybe. Cheap Eats? Probably not. Sounds like another syndrome of “homestyle” sandwiches for yuppies. You can get a 6-inch sub for much cheaper at Quizno’s, Subway, or any number of family owned Italian Delis. Some places will even throw in the drink.

3/23/05 | Ramen Gets Respect

[ Currently Eating: Oranges ]

Nice article about ramen from The Register Guard in Eugene, OR. They talk about how true ramen is starting to replace the old notion of the dried stuff you get for cheap at Costco. I happen to really like both types… the real kind is amazing in taste when done right at a restaurant and the cheap junk is amazing in what it can save you. Theoretically, you could subsist on a meal of instant ramen all the way through the week. I think several people have even wrote books on that method of eating cheap. Here is a quote from the article:

Long seen as the cornerstone of the American college diet, ramen is finally starting to gain some respect as American diners realize something the Japanese have long known: Instant ramen is not the same as ramen … In Japan, chefs at ramenyas (tiny ramen shops) cook up fresh, springy noodles and add them to savory stocks made from pork, chicken, seafood and kelp.

Soups are seasoned with soy sauce, miso, pork or salt broths and topped with egg, pork loin, fish cake, bamboo shoots, scallions and mushrooms.

1/5/05 | Vegas Hot Dogs

[ Currently Eating: Bologna Sandwich ]

Vegas DogWhen people talk about Cheap Eats in Vegas, it inevitably boils down to buffets, beer, or hot dogs. Well, not always but that’s the gist of it. Anyhow, I saw something on the Food Network about a place that has these gigantic hot dogs for 99 cents. I believe the place in question is Slots-A-Fun The camera films a bunch of tourists laughing and talking about these big weiners. There was some German lady going “ho-ho-ho, these hot dogs are Eeenormoose, not like where ve come from”. Geez.
