We call this technique of creating a quick headpin “making a nub”. You’ll need chain nose pliers (non-serrated) as well as some sort of wire cutter such as a sharp nosed flush cutter. To start take the wire that you’re going to be using (I use 24 gauge half-hard wire sterling), and cut off a piece a little bit longer than the desired length of your homemade headpin. I usually leave about 1/4 inch extra at least, part of it for the headpin “head” and part of it in case you make a mistake. You can always trim the opposite end later so it’s best to leave a bit extra.

Next, take the chain nose pliers and grasp one end of the wire with it.

Rolling your wrist similar to when turning a simple loop make a 180 degree loop at the end of the wire.

Using the chain nose pliers, squeeze or squash the loop down so that instead of oval it is nearly a flat loop.
