Word Order, Title Length, Physical Location
On the previous page you may have wondered why I suggested “Italian Charm Bracelets - Handmade by Aurora Bracelets” instead of something like “Aurora Bracelets - Italian Charm Bracelets”. Well, although the first instinct is to put your company name before the type of jewelry you sell, remember again that search engine robots are read things serially, that is in the order they appear.
Thus, if you put your company name first, they’re likely to place more importance on it than the keyword phrase. And while in general that’s ok, if you are a lesser known jewelry maker you might want a search engine to place more importance on what you MAKE.
If you look around at even the more well known jewelry sites, you’ll often see them put their company name at the END of a string of keyword phrases. This is because they place more importance on coming up in searches for say “Italian Charm Bracelets” and “Hoop Earrings” than being absolutely first in searches for their name. That’s how important a title tag can be in ranking! (I know this used to be the case for search engines in the past, but I’m not as sure how important word order is nowadays.)
But before you go stuffing your title tag with 100s of keyword phrases, it’s also important to keep in mind that many times a title tag that is too long will get cut off in the top of the browser title display. Also, I believe a lot of search engines place less emphasis on the keywords at the end of a really long title tag or may not even pay attention to them at all. So just put in keywords that are really important. There’s no need to go overboard.
One trick that some people use is to specify their physical location in the title tag along with their business name and what they do. This may not be as important with jewelry making, but say for instance you run a automobile repair shop. In that case, a web surfer would be highly likely to type in “Chicago Auto Repair ” rather than just plain “Auto Repair”. If you have your location in the title, you’re more likely to come up higher in those type of search engine results and your potential traffic would be even more highly targeted.
