Here’s a picture of the correct and incorrect way to open a jump ring. As you can see in the jump ring on the right, it has been pulled apart so that the general shape of the circular ring is now nearly an oval. It will be really difficult to shut a jump ring opened this way, especially for larger and thicker wire jump rings. On the jump ring on the left, the ends can be brought together easily, preserving the structure of the ring.
