Basic Juicing Tricks and Tips Plus Juice Reviews

Juicing Poll

Well, some people might think the last ingredient in this juicing recipe is the actual Wake-Up call. Those pepperoncinis can be spicy! But the other ingredients can provide a great pick me up as well. This recipe has a ton of great ingredients in it and can be easily modified if one or two are missing.

Ingredients:

1 carrot
1 sweet apple
1/2 of a cucumber, skin removed if desired
1/2 bell pepper
1 celery stalk
1 zucchini
1 tomato
2 pepperoncinis

Maker: Braun MP80 Juice Extractor
Model Number: MP80
Size: 9.5″ x 6.5″ x 11.4″
Weight: 5.4 lbs.

Basic Features:

250 Watt motor, reversible cover, automatic pulp ejection, container with foam strainer, dishwasher safe plastic parts. Designed for compressed storage and easy assembly.

Review:

Braun is a very popular brand name in many stores and often known as a manufacturer of coffee makers and blenders. The Mp80 is a low to mid price juice extractor offering of theirs whose attraction seems to be the ease of assembly and disassembly, as well as its compact shape. Space is a pretty high commodity in many small kitchens so this is definitely something to take into account.

Cleaning seems to be fairly simple, with most parts not containing extremely small corners that can’t be cleaned. The obligatory juicing macine roar seems to be of mid level tolerability for most folks. The motor is 250 Watts, which is decent.

One issue seems to be the somewhat small and narrow feeder tube. This can be solved by chopping up the fruits and veggies into smaller pieces… it’s not certain if the feed tube is deliberately small to make sure the motor is able to handle the size of product that is put down it. People have also noted that the juice produced seems to be on the pulpy side.

I saw this combination in a book and just could not believe it at first. Strawberry plus Broccoli? That just sounded really weird. But then add in Pineapple and it sounds even more strange to me. A bit warning… I have NOT tried this recipe. Not because I’m not adventurous but mostly because I tend not to have broccoli around that much.

Ingredients:

1 head of broccoli
10-12 strawberries
1/4 pineapple, no skin

This is a pretty simple melon juicing recipe, but it’s pretty effective as far as melons go. It has the potential for adding other fruits as well. (Berries and cherry juice seem to work). The orange helps balance out the sweetness of the melons, although some people actually like that in the drink.

Ingredients:

1/4 cantaloupe, skins and seeds removed
1/4 honeydew, skins and seeds removed
1 orange, peeled but white pith OK

Fruit pic1We don’t really need to extoll the virtues and simplicity of juicing grapes. Grape juice, after all, is already a hugely popular type of juice around the world. Not to mention the result of when it’s fermented!

Grapes are very versatile, but you can actually drink the juice straight up as well. Their size and texture makes juicing with any modern juicer a snap. Just toss the required amount down the shute… no need to remove the stems, seeds or skin.

I sat here for a few minutes trying to come up with a catchy name for this recipe. Bing Cherries taste great, but their juice is a bit powerful which is the reason you want to add the carrots and so much mineral water to the whole thing. Make sure you pit the cherries before juicing! Most juicers will not be able to handle the pits.

Ingredients:

30 Bing Cherries, pits removed
3 medium carrots
1 orange, peeled but pith ok
10 ounces bottled mineral water

A bit of a weird combo perhaps, but it uses two of my favorite ingredients: apricots and cranberries. You can save the pulp to use as a topping for ice cream or other desserts. Apricot jam turns up pretty frequently in dessert recipes for baking, but I’m not sure if you can use this as a substitute.

Ingredients:

2 lbs cranberries
1.5 lbs apricots
1/3 lemon (peeled, but pith ok)
2 cups of ice, crushed

Maker: Black & Decker
Model Number: CJ525
Size: 9.5″ x 6.9″ x 6.9″
Weight: 1.6 lbs.

Basic Features:

1 liter (34 ounce) electric juicer for citrus fruit, automatic reversable reamer with stirrer, 2 cones for different citrus (lemons / limes / oranges / grapefruits), adjustable pulp controller, storage cover, and built in wrappable cord.

Review:

Although true juice fanatics will turns their noses up at “specialty” citrus juicers, this Black & Decker Citrusmate model packs a bunch of features in for very little price. As such, it’s a great value for those who don’t make juice too often, but need to make a lot of it when they do. Fairly solid construction seems to also be a plus. Many citrus juicers break after a few uses, though that’s often due to incorrect or overly heavy usage.

This model has a few interesting features that aren’t available on others similar to it. For one, the juice reamer has an automatic reverse feature that helps to get all the juice possible out of the fruit. Probably the most interesting feature (and one that a lot of people seem to enjoy) is the adjustable pulp control. Not everyone likes orange juice that has tons of pulp in it (as evidenced by the huge amount of “no pulp”, “some pulp”, “a lot of pulp” varieties of OJ at the supermarket).

One of the benefits of actually making your own juice is that you can know what vitamins and minerals that the fruits and vegetables you process contain. Store-bought juice is often supplemented with extra vitamins, which is sometimes good… but then why not just take vitamins?

Many juiceables are rich in beta-carotene which is basically Vitamin A that occurs naturally. Of course, you need look no further than the name to find a prime source of it: the carrot! The thing is that although the carrot contains a lot of beta carotene, you need to eat an awful lot of carrots to get that benefit. So juicing carrots is a great way to concentrate those vitamins to make it so you get the benefits without having to eat 5 pound bags every day.

Many people are fans of orange juice in the morning, but there’s a lot of different juices you can put together for a nice breakfast blast. This one concentrates on the Vitamin C aspect of it all. It may be a bit sour for some because of the lemon and grapefruit. But hey, the whole idea is to wake you up, right?

If it’s too sour, you can either add a little sugar to the resulting drink or substitute an orange for the lemon.

Ingredients:

1/2 pineapple (cut up into “spears”)
1 pink grapefruit (peeled, white pith ok)
1 lemon (peeled, white pith ok)
