OXO Good Grips Potato Ricer
January 8, 2007
We’ve had our OXO Potato Ricer for a good number of years now and are pretty satisfied with the overall quality and performance of the device. In addition to making short work of potatoes, it can also be used to squeeze out excess water from cooked veggies like spinach and mash up fruit into pulp for toppings, desserts or baby food. I haven’t tried it, but apparently it makes pretty decent applesauce as well.
The handles have a nonslip soft rubber handles for extra comfort when squeezing. One thing to keep in mind is that because the output holes on the bottom are so tiny, you can’t really crush up uncooked or harder vegetables very well without using an inordinate amount of force. It just wasn’t made for that type of work.
In addition, it’s a good idea to cut up the potato into much smaller pieces first and not to overfill the receptacle. This is because you’ll have a harder time getting the handles to squeeze down. In fact, those who have very small hands are going to find it near impossible to use just one hand to squeeze it down. This is definitely a two handed device, so make sure the bowl beneath you is secure so that you don’t have to keep one hand free.
I guess one other minor grip I had is that it’s a bit more awkward to store compared to a simple potato masher. The shape of the device, even when closed, will necessitate a large amount of storage space. If you have a hanging rack for pans, it’d be good to store it there to keep it out of the way. But other than the space concerns, this is a great multi-tasking kitchen device to have around.
