Polder Cooking Thermometer

Kitchen Conversation - Polder ThermoThis is a great digital thermometer for cooking that makes use of a seven inch metal probe. The thermometer readout has a large LCD readout that also doubles as kitchen clock. It takes a single double A battery.

We’ve had this Polder Digial Thermometer for awhile and have been pretty pleased by the performance. The timer can function as either a countdown or count-up timer. The temperature readings seem to be fairly accurate, assuming the probe is placed correctly (any of these probe type thermometers can be affected when monitoring meats if the probe is inserted touching a piece of the bone).

One issue we have with it is that it the set time needs to be rounded to the nearest minute - so you can’t really set it for say 5 and a half minutes. However, this shouldn’t be too much of an issue since most people would not be concerned about such a short interval of time when cooking for longer than 10 minutes.

Initially, we were also a bit concerned reading about the numerous reports about the device being susceptible to damage from water and other liquids. The issue seems to be when water gets into the connector between the probe and device. We’ve been extra careful when washing the probe part not to get any water on the tip and to make sure it is completely dry before putting it back together. Same goes with the base unit’s jack receptacle. We saw others having problems with the wire burning through when using it in meat on a grill… we’ve never used it on the grill, only in an oven. So you might want to be extra careful if you’re using a grill, or not even use it at all.
