Stitch ‘n Bitch 1/4/06

“The percentage of women under forty-five who knit or crochet has doubled since 1996,” says Debbie Stoller, author of Stitch `n Bitch. This little book single-handedly took the activity of knitting from “old and frumpy” to “sassy and hip.” Suddenly, everyone from my little cousin Emily to big-name Hollywood stars are into knitting. They know where their LYS is and are proud to show off and talk about their WIP whenever the subject is brought up (”Local Yarn Store” and “Work In Progress,” respectively).

I have quite a few knitting books, but I find myself always going back to Stitch ‘n Bitch for reference, whether it be instructions on making tassles, fringes, or pom-poms, or looking up the correct way to do a button hole. Stitch ‘n Bitch has very easy-to-understand diagrams and instructions, details to explain the basics of knitting, and really cute patterns and projects to try. Everything is colorful and young and hip - this is definitely not your granny’s old hobby. Stitch ‘n Bitch is also a pleasure to read because of its sassy attitude and wry sense of humor. No wonder it has become the “knitting bible” for 20- and 30-somethings. It is a must-have in any knitting library.
