While surfing around at various indie boutiques, I found some very cool cards over at The Walrus and the Carpenter. Although the title refers to characters in Lewis Carroll’s “Through The Looking Glass…”, you don’t have to like poetry in order to appreciate some of the cool paper goods that they make!

Giao and Hoa are the two crafters who run The Walrus and the Carpenter. In addition to a nice selection of paper goods they also make and sell things like handmade clothes (such as aprons and tops), tote bags, embroidered pillowcases, and even toys and beds for your pooch.

Here’s a little bit about the philosophy of the shop, written by Giao on their website:

My goal with The Walrus & The Carpenter is to create one-of-a-kind goodies for people who revel in not completely blending into the background. Nothing too radical goes on here, but unique goodies are always the aim. When we first started out, everything was crafted personally by me and/or by Hoa. We’re slowly expanding the shop to include unique goodies from other artisans and crafters. All items from other crafters will be duly noted for your information. Thank you for the opportunity to try our hands at our own looking-glass magic (we’re still cube-farming days).

Here’s an example of one of their card selections. These colorful Parasol blank note cards feature a bright pink umbrella that looks a bit like a poppy in bloom. The parasol is decorated with green blossom embroidering around the edges and is set against a blue sky. They sort of look like they’ve already been captured by the wind!

There are 4 notecards in each set (same design for each card), and measure 4 1/4 by 5 1/4 inches in dimensions. Envelopes are included in the set.

These Mix and Match Stationery sets sure seem to catch the eye. Having previously featured both the Sushi-nery and Dots-n-Jots packages before, I thought we might as well continue the trend with this adorable set of sheets and envelopes that features retro sewing patterns.

I saw this interesting product in the Paper Scrapbooking section of Joann.com. This is actually a portable mini-printer from Xyron that lets you print on virtually anything you’d like. The description said it would print on rough and uneven surfaces like wood, tissue paper, some fabrics and even on ribbon and metal.

The full name of the product is the Xyron Design Runner Personal Papercrafting Printer. It takes 2 nine volt batteries and requires special ink cartridges to print. I think it might have been nice to have an optional AC outlet plug since I’m not a big fan of buying batteries repeatedly. It says that the ink cartridge should last for 5000 embellishments printed. When not using the device, you’re supposed to place it in its supplied dock in order to prevent the ink from drying out.

I believe that it comes with one starter disc that has 40 design embellishments. You basically just select the design you want printed and then just swipe along the area that is going to be printed. The fact that you can print on things without having to run them through a usual stationary printer with rollers (that would probably jam on uneven surfaces) is a huge plus.

Green Chair Press • 2/16/06

There are some wonderful examples of bookmaking over at the Green Chair Press which is a California based letterpress-printing outfit started by Susan Angebranndt. In addition to letterpress, Susan’s handbound limited-edition books frequently incorporate a number of whimsical elements such as pop-ups and collages. The binding …
