4/29/05 | 1:12 pm | OT: Anybody in Oregon?

Sorry for the off topic post. I’m going to post up a new clue around 2:00 PDT or so. But in the meantime… I noticed (from the “Teacup” clue) that some of you are from Oregon or go to school there. I’m thinking of taking a trip there some time, but I’m not sure yet. Would you have any recommendations (besides Crater Lake which I’ve been to when I was a kid) for places to visit? If so, could you leave a comment… thx!

  1. Justin Says:

Try Multnomah Falls off of Interstate 84 in the Columbia River Gorge. It’s about an hour east of Portland.

  2. Scavengeroogle Says:

Justin - Hey, I think I’ve heard of Multnomah before… I’ll look it up, thanks for the tip!

  3. Michael James Says:

    - Mt. St. Helens - 2 hours away
    - Columbia River Gorge Scenic HWY (old HWY) - 30-60 mins
    - Wineries near Newberg and Salem
    - Numerous breweries in and around Portland
    - Ocean beaches 90 minutes away
    - Numerous state parks and camping areas along the coast
    - Diamond craters in SE Oregon, near Burns
    - Newberry Crater, near Bend, OR
    - Astoria bridge, astoria column and old WW2 military bunkers in and around Astoria

Hope you make a trip out of it, it’s a wonderful place to travel. Have you considered camping up the coast? I’ve done that the last two summers.

Michael - Thanks for the list! My earlier trip(s) to Oregon were when I was much younger… we did Crater lake and I think we stayed near the coast the other time. I believe it’s called Winchester Bay? Parents had a camper which was convenient. I don’t know how it is there now, but I remember having quite a bit of Dungeness crab…

Pacific City… by far the best beach on the coast. Its a little tiny place north of Lincoln city, conviently located away from most tourists as well even during the sunniest days. If driving an SUV u can actually pull out on the coast, to find a terriifc view of a gigantic rock about a quarter mile out, and there is a HUGE sand dune that is fun to climb and grab great views. This place allows campfires on the beach. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. If you surf, this is one of the few places on the coast near portland that surfers can practice.

Benji - thanks for that tip. Funny you mention it but I DO have a gas guzzlin’ SUV. So I would definitely try to go to Pacific City. Sigh… it is looking more and more improbable that I’m going to be making it out to Oregon this summer. I still hope to get out there one of these days…
