No, I don’t know as much about skateboards as a few of my friends thought I did. I was a real poser. I had a skateboard but couldn’t skate. But I knew about the Bones Brigade, which is the name of this clue. Brian N. sent this clue in which is a building shaped like a gray bone. Neat! Woof!

It’s visible from quite far out, though 12/15 is pushing it a bit. I think it’s possible that it’s a recognizable building for locals. If you happen to live in the area and you know the clue already, could you let us know what this building is? I’ll post it up afterwards.

So to the word clue that Brian was going to give you. It actually took me awhile to completely put together what he was getting at. I guess I could have asked for clarification, but I wanted to figure it out on my own. Duh… I am the mental supersloth.

Anyhow, I think I will modify the clue a bit to make it a little easier:

“Sandy Waffle, Take 5″

Ugh, I’m so irresponsible when it comes to word clues. I’m like the word clue gremlin; it’s possible I might have made it even worse through unknown pickled herrings. As such, look for frequent apologies and clue drops along the way…

You’ve got until 2:00 p.m. PDT today. I think I will stick with one clue a day for now, but I am also thinking that maybe Fridays will be Fun Double Clue Day! Plus, a lot of you seem to have Fridays free (for the college kids). Ok, bang a gong, we are on…

[Edit: 10:18 PDT - I’ve actually got to go somewhere until about 1:30, so you get a second clue drop early. Actually, here are 2 for good measure: “Take 5″ is not music related. And: waffle commercials. Oh, I won’t be able to update solutions pending so don’t worry if you don’t see the number go up.]

[Edit: 12:56 PDT - Got back early. Oops, some of you will want to disregard the “waffle commercial” hint. It’s causing a lot of confusion instead of enlightenment… ]

I originally bypassed the Sandy Waffle bit and went straight to a Google search for highway 5 (not knowing my west coast hwy’s well). That first brought me to Kamloops B.C. and hwy 5 ended before it got to the U.S. and no bones in Kamloops. Another Google for “U.S. Highway 5″ took me to New Haven, Ct. and the small highway 5. Long road, some big towns, no bones. Then I sat back and thought about the waffle bit. I know, I can hear a collective, “duh!”.

It worries me about Googles results when it bypasses such a major highway in liew of two small roads, tho. Keep the fun coming, please.

  8. Mike Z Says:

Well, it’s not really Google’s fault because the highway isn’t usually called “Highway 5.” Had you searched for “Interstate 5″ you’d have found it immediately. Typically, the word “highway” is only used for U.S. highways and state highways, not interstate highways. Confusing, no?

  9. Scavengeroogle Says:

I think it’s interesting the different ways that people call their highways / freeways / interstates. For instance where I live, it’s common to call Interstate 5 and most every highway here by prefacing the number with the word “The”. So, “go south on The 710 till The 5 then head south on The 405″. A high school friend of mine, who went to live in Boston area to go to school, said many people looked at him strange whenever he called a freeway or highway by the number prefaced by the word “The”. I didn’t know that this wasn’t common practice elsewhere!

  10. Mike Z Says:

As far as I know, the “The” practice is only used in Southern California. It might be used in more places on the west coast. I don’t know since L.A. and San Diego are the only area of the west coast I’ve been to. The first time I was in L.A., hearing everyone say “the 405″ or “the 210″ drove me crazy. I just wasn’t use to this weird way of getting directions. The other annoying thing about L.A. and S.D. roads is that the names of the highways don’t match up with the numbers exactly. The Ventura Freeway includes parts of the 101 and the 134. If you follow the 101, you’ll be on both the Ventura Freeway and the Hollywood Freeway. It’s crazy.

Where I grew up we prefixed the interstates with “I” and prefixed the other highways with “route.” For example, “take I-75 and get off on the exit for route 60″ or something like that.

Where I am now, there aren’t any prefixes whatsoever! For instance, “Go east on 410 and then get on 281 north and take that until you get to 46″.

I guess each area has their own style…
