About Scavengeroogle
Scavengeroogle is a scavenger hunt game where you use Google maps to find the location of a particular graphical clue. (see us in Wired Magazine)

8/4/05 | 2:25 pm | Bounty: Square Rivers

click to search using Google MapsWhew, hello there again. If you are new to the site, thanks for visiting. There were quite a few new people coming here the past 3 days. Anyhow, I decided to start putting up more Scavengeroogle Bounties … I am still not sure about whether this works to have no word clue, but we will keep doing it that way for now till I get more prizes, and more time to work on the site.

This may be a lame one because it’s not really distinctive… I’ve called it Square Rivers, but perhaps it should have been called Right Angle Rivers. It is actually visible quite far up, at 12/18 magnification.

I’m going to experiment with something that Mark L had originally mentioned… give a VERY general description of where on the planet the clue is. I think I will go with the standard “Seven Continents” structure of Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia. For the time being at least you will get a “continent hint”

The continent hint for this one is: Asia.

On that note I am also thinking of changing the terminology of “word clue” to “word hint“. It was a bit confusing because the graphical clues that are given are called “picture clues”… so I’ll call them Word Hints from now on.

click to search using Google MapsAh, the prize. Of course. This is a quickie, just a postcard, but a pretty cool one of the little town of Solvang. You see old fashioned Danish style windmills in the picture which is not that unusual except that Solvang is located just north of Santa Barbara, California.

I have been here several times, it’s a stopover for a lot of folks heading up the California Coast. But some hard-core Solvang fans make trips exclusively to there. A bit of a tourist trap. The back of the postcard reads:

Numerous Danish styled windmills, homes, store buildings, bakeries, foods, and Danish customs give this quaint village the old-world charm that has earned Solvang the title “Danish Capital of America”.

Okily dokily. Now remember, don’t spend the rest of tonight, tomorrow and this weekend on this bounty. They are meant to be something just in the back of your mind, just leisurely incubating there while you solve daily clues or ‘Roogle around for fun. I keep saying it, but don’t stress over these things!

SOLUTION STARTS HERE

Owing to me being away from computer for a few days, I missed the solution sent in by Mark L for this clue. He says:

Well……. there it is….. probably a couple hours here and there since it was put up…… used background color to eliminate having to look through too many high res tiles. It was quote rewarding to sneak up on it I must say.

Since I didn’t get to update the bounty, there was another correct solution sent in a little bit after by roogler Justin:

I decided to search Moscow, and I just happened to find the bounty in a high-res area just north of Moscow. Altogether, it took about an hour off and on over the course of a couple days.

Sorry about no updates, it has been a rather trying couple of days.

This was cool… I felt it was about right for a bounty. It was bound to be found out sooner or later, but there was at least a few days until it got solved. AND… they both did it without word clues! The “continent” clue really seems to help, I think I may try it for awhile.

  1. Mark L Says:

Oh great…… now I can’t help searching for both bounties at the same time….. I’m Roogling Googling my brain and it’s all your fault Scavengeroogle master.

Solvang is a great little mock-european town…. well at least it was when my folks would take me there when I was a kid.

  2. Scavengeroogle Says:

Mark - Hehe, I am thinking that eventually we will have “Zen” masters of Scavengeroogling. Ones that are able to simultaneously search for more than one clue at a time. There are a few Roogle cats around here that probably qualify…

Yeah, my parents took me to Solvang too! Funny…

  3. Moose Says:

Would being a ZenRoogler include searching for multiple bounties plus daily clues while taking between 40 and 60 calls per day? Perhaps you should set up some system of ranking the ‘Rooglers. You could base it on the percentage of daily clues that each person solves within regulation. Number solved by one person / Total number of daily clues = ‘Roogle Ranking. It could be a little difficult, but all you would really have to do is keep a spreadsheet to which you could add the names of all the new ‘Rooglers that keep coming. Does this even sound like a good idea, or is it just a wild fantasy of mine? Hell, I could even do the ranking system if you would like me to. Just an idea…

  4. Aaron Says:

    whee!

i love looking for these because I come across all sorts of random stuff in places I’d prolly not go and look at otherwise.

    I’m gathering daily clue ideas^^

  5. Scavengeroogle Says:

moose - ZenRoogler! I have thought about it for a long time, to actually give users a “permanent” name, account, status, etc. It would be simple to setup the spreadsheet but I could see it taking a lot more time, which i don’t really have. To update the spreadsheet constantly would be nuts. I have thought that “automating” it would be feasible, except im not sure how “users” work in the context of what i am using now for site. but i will investigate that some this weekend.

aaron - hehe, that IS an ulterior motive of course: to foster the discovery of new daily clues!

  6. Olive Says:

What? You had me looking in Asia. Moscow’s in Europe!

  7. Scavengeroogle Says:

olive - I looked at one of the europe/asia continent maps and it put russia in Asia. So I said Asia. Even though my first instinct was not to. But actually I never thought that Russia was Europe either. Quite interesting when you think about it. Anyhow, continents are a manmade thing and like I said they teach different divisions in different places (7,6,5 continents etc…)

  8. Jon G Says:

According to Wikipedia, Russia is one of a few countries that is considered to be in two continents. Moscow is in the western part of Russia that is considered to be part of Europe.

  9. Scavengeroogle Says:

jon g - oops. er, well in that case Olive is right to complain. I’ll try check Wikipedia first for future “continent hints” =)

  10. Moose Says:

I love the idea of our own Roogle account! I think an awesome if each member had the option of including either a satellite image of where he/she lives or possibly just the link to that area. Of course, that would be entirely optional for each member, but I think it would be cool. Just another possible use of Google Maps–bringing us all a little closer together!
