About Scavengeroogle
Scavengeroogle is a scavenger hunt game where you use Google maps to find the location of a particular graphical clue. (see us in Wired Magazine)

click to search using Google MapsHappy hump-day to you all. Looking forward into a long weekend, it feels very good to hit the middle of the week. I wasn’t going to put this clue up at first because it looks like a Green Pacman and if there is any one category for clues that have been oversubmitted, it’s pacmen. Just take a look in the Oklahoma Panhandle and other areas if you don’t believe me.

However, many of these pacmen, or “partial circles” as clue submitter Jordan likes to call them, are extremely large or even visible only a low res. This one is relatively small, and sort of cute. So I decided to give him a chance in the spotlight.

By the way, how many of you are old enough to remember obsessing about the “patterns” for the original standup Pacman video game? I remember they even had paperback books with patterns, like “How to Beat Video Games”, haha. I used to know a pattern but for some reason it was only good after the “2nd Apple” level so I was on my own until then.

He’s still visible at 15/18 so you can see him from decently far out. With word hints, it was very difficult to come up with some that weren’t too easy. I think I will go with a mutated variation of Jordan’s for now, hope this is not too tough:

“Sylvia Plath’s view is evergreen”

You should look forward to a few more bounties which I am planning on throwing up over the weekend which should be a bit more difficult! In any case, roogle on…

[Edit: 9:00 am PDT - Definitely a first… no solutions waiting for me when I got up this morning. I fear that I’ve botched the word hints, ugh. Let’s try for a region drop first: Northwest U.S.]

[Edit: 11:47 am PDT - Wow, I must have really messed up the word hints. Ok, getting right down to it: What did she write?]

[Edit: 2:55 pm PDT - Sorry, this is proving to be frustrating for a lot of people. I tell you what, I’ll just give one of Jordan’s original word hints. I would like to see how the difficulty would have changed. Here you go: “A nice view of the local bell”]

  1. David M Says:

Well this one has me stumped, although I feel I could now teach a course on Sylvia Plath. I am sure I have made it more difficult than I should. Congrats to those of you who have figured it out. Back to “real” work.

  2. Scavengeroogle Says:

david - sorry, but take comfort knowing it has stumped a huge number of people. Word hint difficulty is a fickle, fickle thing. It is nigh impossible to get it just right…

  3. Jon G Says:

David M - I am in the same boat as you as far as knowing everything about her but not being able to figure out the clue, oh well. I’ve been in a bit of a ‘roogling slump that I hope to get out of very soon.

  4. Scavengeroogle Says:

Jon G - it is definitely not only you guys. I knew something was wrong when I got up this morning and there were no solutions waiting. I usually have 5-10 waiting already by 10pm.

I just dropped a third hint, it is Jordan’s original one. See if that helps some…

  5. Brent J Says:

Okay - i give up (for now). I think I now suffer from the same levels of depression as Sylvia herself!

  6. Aaron B Says:

as long as there isn’t any time sensitive suicide involved for folk.

you know, don’t want to accidentally knock someone out because of a gas leak…

  7. The Other Chris R. Says:

This is a tough one today. I still haven’t been able to find anything in the NW US about Sylvia Plath or her stories. I’m probably just not looking hard enought though. On another note, I don’t know how many other ‘rooglers are from Louisiana like myself, but I’d like to thank you for giving me something to help take my mind off the stress involved in trying to locate friends and family affected by the hurricane. I always look forward to the hunts and today it was much needed.

  8. Judy B Says:

Hold up a second. Let’s think about this. Even if the clue proved to be a bit obscure, didn’t we all learn quite a bit about an extremely interesting (except when you’d read it sixteen times trying to figure out the clue) and accomplished woman poet and writer? I don’t know about the rest of you, but I love an excuse to learn stuff I never even thought about before. So here’s the equation that works for me: INTERESTING RESEARCH + NOT DOING WHAT I’M BEING PAID TO DO + LOOKING LIKE I’M BUSY AND STILL GETTING PAID WHILE HAVING A FUN TIME = GOOD.

  9. Jordan Says:

Wow, i didn’t think this would be that hard, but it makes me feel special knowing that i stumped a whole lot of people!

  10. Scavengeroogle Says:

    brent j - don’t be depressed! it’s just scavengeroogle =)

the other chris - I was going to post something about the devastation in from Katrina. I usually do post whenever something horrible like this comes up, just to say hope that all you rooglers and your families/friends are doing ok. I have been to New Orleans myself so it was unbelievable to see all the streets underwater. It is truly horrible, and I hope that all of you who live there are at least safe and sound. I am glad if scavengeroogle helped to take your mind off of things for a bit…

judy - yes, I was also going to post something about, “hey, don’t knock LEARNING for godsakes!” =) But I am a bit guilty myself of introducing people like Sylvia Plath into word hints without going through the trouble of researching it myself! Anyhow, yeah at the very least, I hope in running this site I’m learning a little bit more about geography myself. It is interesting, because I am the worst with world geography and here I am running a geography based game! If you asked me to point out a country like Belgium or El Salvador on a map, I’m not sure I could do it without looking it up….

  11. Scavengeroogle Says:

Jordan - well, part of it was me screwing up your word clues too. i have a bad habit of messing with them, as other rooglers can testify to. =) Thanks for submitting!

  12. Aaron B Says:

i had fun learning about the stuffs involved with Ms. Plath. I just had issues with figuring out what stuffs the clue was refering to. You know, red herrings that may or may not have anything to do with anything… Course, it makes sense in hindsight.

  13. Scavengeroogle Says:

yup, the little fishies were everywhere on this one! =)

  14. Heather G. Says:

This is my second time roogling successfully…Sylvia Plath also threw me for a loop…I was ignoring the obvious and hunting for a more obscure clue, I think…
Anyway, it’s fun to actually find one, even if it takes awhile! :)
