11/20/05 | 11:03 am | Shark Jaws

click to search using Google MapsHello there. I decided to launch a clue earlier since it’s a short week for most folks. Plus, I’m going to have my hands full discovering how to cook a turkey. Oh boy, fun. Anyhow, this clue will run Sunday-Tuesday.

I remember seeing the movie “Jaws” when it first came out. I don’t know about you, but for a long time after that I was pretty terrified about any kind of deep water. It didn’t really matter if it was a neighbor’s pool or not! I would imagine Jaws coming up from the deep end of the pool and biting my leg as I tried to get out of the pool.

Roogler Andrew has reminded me of my old fears by sending in this interesting set of buildings shaped like Shark Jaws. It’s either that or some kind of hybrid metal mouth Pac-man. I wouldn’t want to get near those choppers.

This is barely visible at 14/18, but 15/18 seems to be a better bet. It’s interesting, around 15/18 magnification seems to be about the optimum distance for most of our clues lately. I think because they’re often buildings and most buildings aren’t large enough to be seen reliably higher than 15.

We’ve had a few easier word hints recently. I think I made some that are a bit harder, though can’t be sure. I definitely know that there are a few red herrings with both parts of the hints below. Witness the following:

“Marathon divided by 4.3667. Water after the bridge.”

But I have been wrong before about clues being difficult. I always underestimate you Rooglers! I’ll probably drop a general region with this one regardless of solutions. Well, hope you have a nice Thanksgiving with all the fixings!

[Edit: Mon 9:55 a.m PST - Interesting, of the 3 sols so far, no one used the first part of the clue at all…]

[Edit: Mon 8:25 pm PST - Tough hints, as I thought. I guess I will give a region hint: Northeast U.S. I don’t know if the marathon clue makes any sense after reading it through again. Ignore it if you want. ]

10/5/05 | 12:01 am | Turquoise Turtle

click to search using Google MapsGabba gabba hey. And all of that jazz. You are, of course, looking for this week’s daily clue. Ah yeah, I find it kind of funny that I’ve given them the name “Daily clue” when they are not every day an as of a little while ago take two days instead of one. Oh wells.

But anyhow, here you have a Turquoise Turtle clue for your Roogling pleasure. The mysteriously named Artvandalay was the person who sent in this clue… isn’t that some sort of Seinfeld reference? All I know is my friend who loved Seinfeld used to sign into instant messenger with that handle. The turtle has his head to the southwest and is composed of what looks like a cluster of blue buildings. Hm… I guess Super Magic Crunchy Bonus Points are in effect - what exactly are those buildings? They are available at 15/18, by the way.

Ok, off you go on your scavenger hunt. Oh wait, the word hints. Uh, uhm…

“Lyons and Tigers, Oh Mi”

I have completely stitched up the word hints in the usual evil herringbone way. This is a 2 day clue again, so I’ll check in from time to time… probably drop hints along the way.

Say, anyone know good non-prescription drug remedies for better sleep? Like Kava-Kava and that kinda stuff. I have been having problems getting continuous sleep lately but I don’t want to take anything that’ll put me out of commission the next day. Also, I didn’t want to drink any al-key-hol - though I know that definitely works on me! =)

[Edit: 10:03 am PDT Wed - Good morning everyone (or afternoon for some). Seem to be doing OK with this clue for now. I will just say that there are herrings to be waded through for this clue, but you are probably on the right track if you press on and go through all of them.]

[Edit: 11:00 pm PDT Wed - Hi there, or good evening. There were a good amount of solutions. However, I know quite a few rooglers were tearing their hair out at the multiplicity of herrings so I thusly will attempt to eliminate a few. In lieu of a region hint, here is a negative-region hint: Not in Ohio. I knew that some would try there because of “Oh”. That is correct, the turtle is not in Ohio. Hope that helps, see you tomorrow!]

[Edit: 1:45 pm PDT Thu - Not much to report today. Except this - I just discovered that last week a 90 million dollar California lottery ticket was purchased at a 7-11 that I go to some of the time, very close to my house. *Kicks Self For Not Buying Lottery Ticket This Past Week*]

9/20/05 | 12:01 am | Beach Swan

click to search using Google MapsHello Scavengeroogle peeps! Let’s hope there are no more power outages this week in L.A… but something good did come out of that mess. Today’s clue is going to be the first “deliberate” two-day long clue. I noticed that the clue’s staying power didn’t seem to suffer that much from the outages, and in fact quite a few people actually appreciated the extra chance to take a crack at it.

So this clue is what appears to be a swan on a beach, and hence the rather imaginative title I’ve given it “Beach Swan”. I have to laugh like hell at my original-ness. Also at my grammar. =)

The clue was sent in by “Ray”, no last name or initial that I could see. The swan is visible at about 15/18 or so, so it’s a good sized feature. I debated a long time on the word hints and finally decided to use a much, much shorter version that the ones that were sent in. How short? Well, all that you are going to get for the time being is:

“I Love Fire”

Since it’s a 2 day clue, I figure it’s OK if some struggle with it for a bit. Or not. I’m constantly proven wrong on the so-called hard clues. Anyhow, I’ll catch you all later…

[Edit: 9:18 am PDT Tues - Lots of thunderstorms in my area… haven’t had those for awhile. Let’s start with the most general region: United States]

[Edit: 8:40 pm PDT Tues - Not as many sols today, as expected. I’m not sure what other hints to give… think I will sleep on it and try come up with more tomorrow.]

[Edit: 2:12 pm PDT Wed - I think I’ll just leave the clue as is. By the way, I hope that all of you in the Texas coast area are getting away safely from the storms coming in…]

[Edit: 6:26 pm PDT Wed - Man, that was some drama with the plane landing at LAX with the nosewheel turned sideways…]

8/26/05 | 12:45 am | Butterfly Building

click to search using Google MapsEr, hello again. What’s this… more than one clue launched in a week you say? The sky must be falling. Well, Scavengeroogle was recently featured on TV! They did a short 5 minute feature on G4’s Attack of the Show (Sarah’s Damn Good Websites) so I figured I should probably put up a clue today so new players coming in have something to try out. (BTW, if you are new to playing, you might want to check out the FAQ first)

Actually, I got a whole boatload of excellent clue submissions from Aaron B. the other day (who thoughtfully provided word hints with each one) and I decided to start going through them. Up on tap today: turn your head 45 degrees to the right and you’ll be able to see these Butterfly Buildings a little more easily. We seem to like insect based clues a lot (previous ones include Metal Moths and Bug Hunt).

The butterfly is available at a 14/18 magnification or so, pretty far out. As for word hints, like I said Aaron has provided some which I haven’t really altered too much. Let’s see how it goes with:

“Sullivan’s Pal in the Desert”

Whah? Yeah. I think I will drop a region clue as soon as I get up in the morning if there are no solutions in. Hey guess what, I’ve been conscripted to do some more painting at my folks’ house. Hooray… well, this means I’ll be checking in periodically only. So don’t worry if you don’t see the “Pending Solutions” incrementing. Ok, have a good weekend…

[Edit: 9:45 am PDT - Urgh, I just got up. Couldn’t go to sleep till about 4 am. Anyhow, I woke up and there was like a billion emails in my mailbox. The clue and word hints seem to be doing well (lots of fast solutions) but I think I will still give a general region for those first time players: Southwest U.S. It’s off to painting for me, see you after lunch!]

[Edit: 7:56 pm PDT - Sorry no updates all day. Just finished painting awhile back. The fumes were amazing, and not in any good way. So anyhow I’m happy to report quite a few solutions to thee butterflies. I gotta close down this one in a few hours so I can write up the solution and go to sleep. Hope to be back with some new stuff early next week…]

8/24/05 | 12:01 am | Peacock Gardens

click to search using Google MapsGood morning (or night for you insomniacs). I’m writing this clue up from my parents’ house right now. My PC is still on the blink which is the reason for that. Getting used to the software in our Powerbook though, in case I lose my PC again. I’ve been a bit down in the mouth for scavenger hunts out lately, but maybe I’ll get more inspired with this whole back to school thing.

Anyhow, this clue from Brian Z is of a pretty cool looking “peacock”… I think they are gardens which is why I’ve named the clue Peacock Gardens. Imaginative, to say the least. What it also reminded me of was the Spirograph drawing toy, though I don’t suppose many remember that. I had a crapload of the wheels and everything…

I have a feeling this is one of those clues where it’s either extremely simple extremely difficult depending on where you start. Wait, that’s how ALL of our clues are. But I really am at a loss to make up some word hints, so I’ll provide a variation of Brian Z’s:

“Curvy Tigress”

Yup, that’s all you get. Oh, also the peacock gardens are also viewable at 15/18. I will be dropping a region clue hopefully. I’ve been working out of my parent’s house during the day lately (would you believe I’m painting their fricken house) so I’ll try see if I can’t take some breaks to check in once in awhile.

[Edit: 9:45 am PDT - Well, looks like the clue is going OK. I am actually on the Powerbook again, probably not painting my parents house today and thus will be able to update periodically. Let me start off with a general region (which is probably apparent to a lot of people already even if they haven’t found the clue): Middle East.]

[Edit: 12:18 pm PDT - I’ll be out for about 4-5 hours but will check back around dinner. Looks like we won’t need more clues drops for today… see ya all soon.]

8/3/05 | 12:01 am | Metal Moths

click to search using Google MapsMy, my, the clues will fly. Hello there. I got this cool find from Judy B. of what looks like two moths in flight. Obviously, they are buildings of some sort but the resemblance is pretty cool. Well, they could also be alien spacecraft… but of course we all know there’s no such thing as UFOs right? Sorry, that was the government agent in me speaking…

Anyhow, the mothies are visible at a fairly respectable 14/18. You should be able to see them flutter from high up on your scavengeroogle viewing port. I have decided to mangle Judy’s clues a bit. Here you go:

“Patton Lucks Out”

I have a feeling that there may be some who don’t have any trouble at all with the clues, but I am prepared to region drop if need be! Until later on: May all your clues be live and your roogle solutions be monstrous!

[Edit: 10:10 am PDT - How’s it going? A few solutions so far, so I will wait a couple more hours b4 considering a region…]

[Edit: 12:34 pm PDT - OK, I’ll start off with a very general region clue, actually a region exclusion. The Metal Moths are NOT located in the U.S.A. That should start the ball rolling for some…]

[Edit: 12:51 pm PDT - I see a lot of people coming here from I-Am-Bored and MetaFilter … if this is you, hello and welcome to ‘Roogle central! Take a look around at some of the past clues and submit some of your own if you get a chance.]

7/25/05 | 12:01 am | Sea Snake

click to search using Google MapsHey. Welcome to another wild week at Scavengeroogle. Yes, I will be working on getting more bounties up soon. And thank you for your submissions, whether I use them or not…

Anyhow, this clue comes from the slightly mysterious Kilovh (is that kilovolt-hours?) . He has named it “Sea Snake” because it is some sort of green path that resembles the curls of a snake (the head is at the bottom). The contrast on this is kinda dim so you may have to squint a bit. I thought that nearly as interesting as the snake feature was the prominent geometric circular pattern near the top though.

You might notice this clue pic is rotated, I decided to make it variable… because sometimes the pieces I’d like to show are easier to show when the picture is vertical.

The sea snake is visible from about 15/18 out, possibly at 14/18. So… the infamous and dangerous word clues (courtesy of Kilovh):

“Olive Plum Place”

And no… nothing to do with Melrose Place. Yeah, I know you watched that show.

We haven’t done region drops in awhile… I think due in some part because we’ve gotten closer to our pursuit of the perfect AVERAGE clue. But anyway, I always check in at least once a day during the clue duration. So if it comes to it, I’ll let fly with one. Have fun ‘roogling!

[Edit: 9:30 am PDT - I am bit stunned that no one has solved this one… at first I was wondering if it had actually “launched” or not. Maybe I should have made it a “bounty”! Well, let’s start off regioning by announcing that this is NOT in the US…]

[Edit: 11:52 am PDT - Hm.. very weird. I think my email may have been on the blink for the past 1/2 day or so. So if you sent in the solution to the clue earlier (Mark L, Mike B: I got yours), could you please send it again? This might explain the lack of solutions.]

7/19/05 | 12:01 am | Tortoise Head

click to search using Google MapsHi, and hi again to you ‘roogles! Come here for your roogle fix, have ye? Well, I aims to please…

I got this clue in from Robert E. (no, not Robert E. Lee of civil fame) and it is a fun and quite cute picture of a tortoise’s head peeking out of its shell. It sort of looks like it has been painted in brush strokes (I believe the black is rivers actually) I particularly like how the tortoise seems to be smiling slightly. Happy turtles!

Mr. Tortoise is visible from about 14/18. I have been in a puzzle-y mood so the word clues that Robert gave were right up my alley. Actually, I decided to modify them in the usual herringwise way. So, this MAY be a little tougher. Famous last words before hordes of correct solutions descend…

“Mass pomp And over circumstance”

Hm.. looking at it now, I may have mangled them a bit. Herringahoy. Well, if you’re having problems, don’t fret; help may be arriving soon in the form of a region drop.

[Edit: 2:45 pm PDT - Sorry I was out for awhile b4 coming home to quite a few solutions… this seems to be very doable without a region so far. Also, not as many herrings as I thought, cool! See you later on tonight…]

6/17/05 | 9:00 am | Dragonfly

click to search using Google MapsHello Friday. I’m actually starting to run low on clues, so if you’ve got any more submissions send ‘em in. I had to throw out a whole bunch of them because many had a wrong URL that didn’t show anything, or weren’t suitable (i.e. planes, ships, well known landmarks) so it ended up I didn’t have as many backlogged as I thought.

Also, I’ve been a bit lazy… if there’s no word clues submitted I generally don’t select it unless the actual picture clue is fantastic. Then I’m apt to try come up with one. So it’s a combination of a good picture and a good clue that will get your clue on here.

Alas, this isn’t the best of pictures and not the best of word clues. I mean, it doesn’t really look too much like a dragonfly but I figured I might as well use it since I had found this earlier and stockpiled it for such a time as now. The only really good thing about it is that it is visible far out at 10/15. As for word clues, gah. I have such a hard time coming up with these. But let’s try:

“A french monk runs close to it”

I already see so many potential slippery herrings just from googling that I will most certainly need to drop the region clue early. So sit tight if you’d rather not strain the brain because help will be coming soon.

[Edit: 9:42 PDT - Wow, nary a response in sight. Here is the region clue then: Iowa. If that doesn’t help I’ll have to reconfigure that word clue…]

[Edit: 10:38 PDT - Ahh… LOL. This is shaping up to be another one of those, “what are you trying to pull on us?” word clues. OK here are two clarifications, “A french monk runs SORT OF close to it”. And secondly, I just read about some apparent controversy regarding whether or not it IS french monk. So, egg on my face again. You may just want to look up what “monk” means in French and search near there… ]

6/6/05 | 9:00 am | Bug Hunt

click to search using Google MapsGood morning to you all from the past, that is from Saturday night… I decided to get an early start on my clue whilst watching SNL (still like the old ones better, but what else are you going to watch?) Anyhow, Jim M sent in a cool bug for today’s clue, which is of course called “Bug Hunt”.

Speaking of bugs, the other day I discovered some tiny “wood pellets” around a small hole in my bedroom floor (we have wooden floors that are raised up above the ground). I actually don’t think it’s termites but a subterranean type of wood boring beetle. I googled it… hmm, may have to get that treated. Ugh.

Anyhow, Mr. Bug is visible from quite far out, perhaps 12/15 or even 11/15 because it’s a very distinct shape and bright white. As for the clue, I think we will go directly with the clue thought up by Jim because I thought it was pretty clever. We’ll see how hard it is, and I will probably drop a region clue sooner or later. Here’s the clue:

“Hope’s Springs Eternal”

Wow, this is really distracting writing this up while watching TV. I think I’ll have to sign off now so I can pay attention to these scintillating skits featuring Tom Brady. Thank you again for playing and stay tuned for clues…

6/1/05 | 9:00 am | Flying Kangaroo Rat

click to search using Google MapsHello lovely scavengerooglers! Did you have a big extended BBQ weekend? I didn’t. Instead, I stayed home and installed a second hand, half broken radio in the car and then cleaned out my bathroom sink drain pipe which was starting to smell like yummy sewage…

Anyhow, Michael J sent in this cool picture of what he called “rainbow water” but what I’ve decided to call Flying Kangaroo Rat. Come on, you must admit it looks like a kangaroo rat that has sprouted wings… no? I particularly like the colors on this one. It is visible quite far out, about 8/15 to 9/15. Because of that, and because it is pretty easily spotted because of the colors I decided to make the word clues very difficult to start with. Here you go:

“U Mill”

I will dispell immediate multiple scavenger herrings by saying right off the back that “U” does not stand for “University”… I’ll drop the region clue soon. And of course other clues if needed!

[Edit: 9:50 PDT - It appears I’ve underestimated both how plainly visible this object is, and everyone’s overall smarts. I thought this would be really hard but I need to remember that most of you know how to play the game and are pretty sharp! Anyhow, here is the region drop as promised: “Utah”. You might also be surprised that I originally didn’t intend the “U” in the clue to stand for Utah… ]

5/27/05 | 9:00 am | Anteater Head

click to search using Google MapsDo you all have your gas grills fired up and ready to go for a BBQ this weekend? I do, or rather I should be getting it ready. I just hope anteater isn’t on the menu… er, bad segue. This clue was found by yours truly, a funny looking anteater head. I found it while looking at a clue submitted by someone. I almost called it Alf, but then I realized that probably no one remembers Alf…

This is visible way far out, at 9/15 maybe? I struggled and struggled to come up with a clue here that wouldn’t give it away too easily and wouldn’t be too hard. I’ve come to the conclusion that, like Paris Hilton keeping her clothes on, it’s just impossible. So I’m going to be unoriginal and say:

Boooring. Well, it may take you a little time at least. And, because I want you all to go into your Memorial weekend on a nice note, I will drop more clues if people have major problems, though I’m not expecting any. Ok, happy anteater scavengeroogling!
