9/12/05 | 12:01 am | Alien Antenna

click to search using Google MapsWelcome to another fun filled (well, sometimes) week at Scavengeroogle. Sorry I completely missed out on a daily clue last week. Although, I did manage to put up some bounties that haven’t been solved yet. I have been mired in this and that and the daily problems of my windoze PC box. Which is finally up and running again! But not before I’d gotten very used to using this Powerbook.

Also, regarding the old unsolved Compass bounty, here is an additional clue: Southeast U.S.. I know many have become disgusted with this one so we’ll try get it solved in the next couple weeks by dropping clues.

As to today’s clue, Jerry R sent in this series of roads(?) that sort of looks like an Alien Antenna. This is actually a rather large clue, though it doesn’t seem like it from the picture. You can see it from as far out as 12/18. Other than the fact that it’s extremely large, it may prove to be difficult. One reason is that there are not a lot of identifying marks on the pic.

The other reason, is that I didn’t feel like coming up with word hints, so I’ve used Jerry’s directly as they are. That wouldn’t be a problem, except that I don’t completely understand how they relate to the clue myself! Anyhow, we’ll see how it goes for you… expect some clue drops or regions as we go if it proves too hard:

“West of where Joktan’s son picks Sego Lilies”

I should be around today, so I’ll be able to update. Thanks for roogling…

[Edit: 9:39 am PDT Mon - I started doing something last night after I setup the clue so I completely forgot I scheduled it for today! Anyhow, Jerry wrote in to say he misspelled something in the word hint which I’ve corrected. But I guess that wasn’t a game breaker for many of you… We’re doing OK for now, so region drop is only going to be: United States]

[Edit: 8:35 pm PDT Mon - Soooo… you may have heard that Los Angeles had a major power outage today. Well, guess where my hosting provider is located? Thusly, I have only now been able to get onto this site. Email is still down. Thus, I am extending this clue until tomorrow sometime. I don’t want to deal with trying to write something up now, plus I won’t be able to tell who has submitted solutions. So, more tomorrow…]

[Edit: 10:13 am PDT Tues - I seem to have gotten my mail back up… I’m not sure if my email was bouncing so I may or may not have gotten all the solutions. Anyhow, thanks for sticking with it even though the site was down. This is kind of interesting to have a 2 day long “daily clue”. More updates later - I don’t expect a huge amount of solutions for this one but that’s ok because of the downtime…]

[Edit: 4:00 pm PDT Tues - We seem to be doing OK so I’ll won’t drop any more hints for now. In addition, some solvers actually appreciated the 2 day long open time for the daily clue… hmm, I might look at making it 2 days instead of a single day. Seems like it’ll give more time to everyone, and we’ll get more solutions and more interaction among the rooglers!]

8/31/05 | 12:01 am | Green Pacman

click to search using Google MapsHappy hump-day to you all. Looking forward into a long weekend, it feels very good to hit the middle of the week. I wasn’t going to put this clue up at first because it looks like a Green Pacman and if there is any one category for clues that have been oversubmitted, it’s pacmen. Just take a look in the Oklahoma Panhandle and other areas if you don’t believe me.

However, many of these pacmen, or “partial circles” as clue submitter Jordan likes to call them, are extremely large or even visible only a low res. This one is relatively small, and sort of cute. So I decided to give him a chance in the spotlight.

By the way, how many of you are old enough to remember obsessing about the “patterns” for the original standup Pacman video game? I remember they even had paperback books with patterns, like “How to Beat Video Games”, haha. I used to know a pattern but for some reason it was only good after the “2nd Apple” level so I was on my own until then.

He’s still visible at 15/18 so you can see him from decently far out. With word hints, it was very difficult to come up with some that weren’t too easy. I think I will go with a mutated variation of Jordan’s for now, hope this is not too tough:

“Sylvia Plath’s view is evergreen”

You should look forward to a few more bounties which I am planning on throwing up over the weekend which should be a bit more difficult! In any case, roogle on…

[Edit: 9:00 am PDT - Definitely a first… no solutions waiting for me when I got up this morning. I fear that I’ve botched the word hints, ugh. Let’s try for a region drop first: Northwest U.S.]

[Edit: 11:47 am PDT - Wow, I must have really messed up the word hints. Ok, getting right down to it: What did she write?]

[Edit: 2:55 pm PDT - Sorry, this is proving to be frustrating for a lot of people. I tell you what, I’ll just give one of Jordan’s original word hints. I would like to see how the difficulty would have changed. Here you go: “A nice view of the local bell”]

7/27/05 | 12:01 am | Tank Turret

click to search using Google MapsWhat is new, ‘rooglefolk? I am sleepy. A quick clue then, before I head off to bed (or get up from bed depending on when this gets launched).

‘Roogle me this… I found this kind of neat looking tank turret thingy while wandering the google map wilds. Actually, now that I look at it, it’s not so much a traditional tank turret than some futuristic turret shooting out a laser beam. Yeah, that’s it.

The turret is available pretty far out, at 14/18. It is a fairly large thing, I wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of that laser beam. For a clue, racking my brain only gets you:

“Chocolayte Empire”

And no… NOTHING to do with Willy Wonky. Get all wonky thoughts of that out of your head. Although, I did like the original Oompa Loompas. Especially their hot, hot song that goes, “Oompa Loompa Doobidie Doo”. I didn’t see the movie remake yet, should I? I heard it’s pretty good.

Ok, to bed… to bed with me. See you in the morning!

[Edit: 9:32 am PDT - A quickie region drop: Northern U.S.]

[Edit: 12:55 pm PDT - No takers? Ok, then: Michigan]

[Edit: 3:45 pm PDT - Whew, the going is slow today. Er, I’m not sure what other clues to drop here. I’ll just say try looking around Michigan in either Street Map or Hybrid mode first before diving into searching the satellite map squares…]

5/18/05 | 9:00 am | His And Hers Pants

[Edit: (01/15/07) I’ve recently noticed a ton of people coming to this page via search due to news stories and whatnot. This was the original Scavengeroogle site which was the first and most popular scavenger hunt game using google maps when they were first launched. It became quite famous (profiled on Wired and G4), but I stopped updating about a year ago because I simply had no time to keep writing up and moderating clues … I don’t upkeep this site anymore, but can see all of the incoming traffic in my stats.

In any case, I believe if you came here from Google Search, you are probably looking for another blog or site that has been on the news. I have noticed in this particular post that someone with the same name as the person(s) that you are most likely looking for had posted comments (I’m not writing down their names here again because I’d like google to stop sending so much unrelated traffic). I believe this is just a massive coincidence, since a reverse IP lookup on the commenter’s location shows it coming from DALLAS. Yes, Dallas and not Missouri.

So, thank you for stopping by: but I don’t believe this site is the one you are looking for. I have actually disabled all the comments on this page, because there is just too much incoming traffic - hopefully, that will propagate through google search in the next couple days. Best Regards, Bryan (Scavengeroogle Admin).]

click to search using Google MapsAloha. I have been wanting to run this clue for some time now, because I came up with what I thought was a clever title for it. This clue was submitted by Michael J. and i’ve called it “His and Hers Pants”. Cool, huh? I also called it that because I really like this lo-fi indiepop band called Pants Yell! (exclamation point is part of the name) so the word pants was on my mind.

This clue is actually extremely visible at 11/15, so I’m assuming this will be cake for a lot of people. And the “re-find” I attempted was really fast. I just really liked the way this clue looks, so if it’s easy then it’s easy. What can ya do?

By the way, I’m getting a lot of clue submission for Planes and Plane Shadows. In general, I try to stay away from anything to do with planes because although they look really cool, nearly all of them have already been spotted on the various google map sightseeing places. So, unless you can prove to me without a doubt that the plane you found has not been recorded on the various sites already, I probably won’t use it. Not that I don’t applaud your effort in finding it!

Hmm.. word clues for this one. I had a really tough time with this. The line between easy and hard was never so blurred.

“Trail where they cried ended SE of here”

I ended up changing the ones that Michael sent in… not sure if this will make them a little more difficult or a little harder. So wait for the region clue if you’re choking on herring. OK see you in a bit; I need to get back to waiting in line for Star Wars…

[Edit: 9:43 PDT - Agh. Sorry, there was no image! My auto-publish thingy screwed up and I didn’t get to check until just now. Anyhow, the correct pic should be there…]

[Edit: 10:42 PDT - Not sure how much this helps, but the region clue = Oklahoma]

[Edit: 12:00 PDT - I’m not sure but this seems to be tough… I gotta go out for awhile so I’ll leave a clue for the meantime: Cherokee]

[Edit: 1:09 PDT - Arghhh… all right last hint: Cherokee is NOT a city. Well, it is but going in that direction will herringise you…]

5/6/05 | 9:00 am | Baby Rattle

click to search using Google Maps

Salutations, and happy Friday. We just cannot seem to get away from Texas. Scott L. sent in some cool clues, among them this neat looking building that resembles a baby’s rattle. Quite visible recognizable from as far out as 12/15. Scott is also one of the few to actually do some hard thinking on what kind of word clues would be appropriate and send in his ideas. That’s very much appreciated, in case I haven’t mentioned it! I’ve taken some of the suggestions he had and combined them in usual Scavengeroogle fashion to leave you with:

“Stonewall, left of Fate”

Note that this is a combination of his ideas; I fear I may have scavengeroogled them into oblivion. Hopefully, this won’t turn into a hair pulling fest again. I am going to be ready to drop clues furiously in case of that, but I’m thinking that there’s a chance I won’t need to. There’s really no way to predict it; the clues I think are too hard are too easy and vice versa. That’s life!

Actually, here is one hint up-front: Don’t jump too quickly to conclusions with this clue, or you might find yourself up to your necks in herring!

Okay, you’ve got until 2:00 p.m. PDT today or so. I’ll be checking in every so often… On your mark, get set, Scavengeroogle!

[Edit: Eeps. Ok, I hear ya…The consensus is that this was WAY too easy. What say we knock off early today around 12:00 then? Happy Friday to ya, and see you all hopefully on Monday.]

4/28/05 | 2:11 pm | Not The RED Button!

What, 3 clues in a day? Well, I wanted to experiment with something, so here you go!

So, the experiment is… I am testing out a new way of doing “Pending Solutions”. Instead of just taking the first five solutions, I am going to take ALL correct solutions sent in before a given deadline. Note that I am on Pacific Time (PDT?). If I get too many, as in hundreds, I am going to have to not write them all down. I’m just testing this out to see if we can give more people an opportunity to solve the clues while still rewarding the “first” people to solve it…

The Deadline for this clue is: Today (Thurs) 9:00 p.m. PDT

Haha, I sort of picture the scenario for this clue as a top secret government bunker hidden in the woods. Noobie Worker, who has just been transfered here as punishment, has wandered into the top secret control room. Fat Lazy Armchair General, looking to show Noobie Worker a good time, gestures to the control panel of thousands of buttons and says “I bet you can’t tell me which of these buttons launches our New-Fangled Missile Interceptor.” Noobie Worker, who watches too much Looney Toones, immediately reaches over Fat Lazy Armchair General and slams the Big Red Button marked “Do Not Press”. And Fat Lazy Armchair General screams, “Not The RED Button…!”

Hurhhh, huhhr… sometimes I funny. Anyhow, this looks to be a google defect, though Josh H. doesn’t rule out the possibility of it being either a smoke cloud or fire. What do you think it is? Your word clue, if you should choose to accept this mission, is “Custer’s ghost roaming the highway”. I’ve omitted an important item in Josh’s original word clue… the number of the highway. I may or may not be giving that away later on, should it prove too difficult…

[Edit: *Ding* Two hours have passed so I feel obliged to offer up the magic number: HWY 16. Don’t get yer hopes up though… there’s a LOT of HWY 16]

This is a really big ring. It should be fairly easy to spot… it’s so big you can see it at 9/15 magnification. I have no idea at all what this is actually. Josh’s word clue is “It might be Moroni’s halo”. Make what you will of that… and again, big giant boingy bonus points if you can tell me exactly what this thing is. Geez, this is getting to be like “What’s My Line” where Drew Carey gives out worthless points to all the contestants…

4/22/05 | 11:26 am | Silver Spoon

click to search using Google MapsOk, this is more of a test than anything else. I just want to see how difficult it is to find a relatively small, non-airport related clue that has pretty much nothing to do with anything. I promise I’m not just trying to kill your eyes and if this is too difficult or boring, I’ll stay away from stuff like this. But I’m still working out the difficulty kinks so it helps to test things out like this.

Well, this SORT of looked like a spoon to me, along with its shadow. A little lame, I know. Also, the word clue is unimaginative (and ambiguous), sorry. I think this might be some sort of satellite dish or transmitter, but as always tell me if you know what it is!
