5/25/05 | 9:00 am | Hershey Kiss

click to search using Google MapsWhat’s up. And all that good morning business. I would like you to check out this tiny Hershey’s Kiss that Jeremy R sent in. When I was a kid I would often accidentally eat some of the metal foil wrapped around those Hershey’s Kisses in my haste to cram 3 or 4 in my mouth. If you have metal fillings, this can provide a distinctly unpleasant feeling in your teeth. Ugh!

Anyhow, the connection seems to be back at my house so I can most likely update as we go. The Hershey Kiss is visible from 12/15 out, though 13/15 is a better bet for most. Funny how the shoreline around this little pond is greyish so it could almost be the silver wrapper on the kiss.

I’ve once again mangled Jeremy’s word clues. I added to his clue, because I thought it might be not enough information on its own. With trepidation, here you go:

Word Clues: “Simple, Ought to lead you to the potato king”

Man, I am extremely nervous about this clue. It’s hard to see from the outside in, if you know what I mean. I am just not sure if this is enough information. Add to that the fact that the clue is fairly small and… we will see I guess. Expect a region drop early and probably more cluedrops to come.

So what do all have planned for Memorial Day? I’m probably going to skip the daily clue on Monday, since many will be out, but hopefully when we get back I can start figuring out this larger Scavengeroogle Hunt we’ve been brainstorming about…

[Edit: 10:11 PDT - This one is proving to be a bit tough so I’ll drop the region clue early: Idaho]

[Edit: 12:15 PDT - A hint: It’s not near Declo. ]

5/23/05 | 9:00 am | Two Much Fun

click to search using Google MapsMan, I do need this coffee. So is it summer session now for you semester college people? It certainly feels like summer here. It was 98 F on Saturday where I live…

By the way, I have been having huge problems with my connection this past week. Cable people are coming out to “fix” some things, whatever that means. Plus, I need to help the parents with some furniture moving at their house. So, I might not get to post clue drops, but I’ve set an “auto-drop” clue for 11:30 today. It’ll show up as an actual post, and I’ll just delete it later. Also, I may not get to update “Pending Solutions” in real time. In any case:

Two, too, to, 2, and finally II. This is what you’re looking for today. Mike Z. sent in this excellent roman numeral find. I can definitely see it as far out as 13/15, maybe 12/15 if you really know what you’re looking for. Mike was going to give you some pretty tough clues, as least I thought they were tough. I’ll mention them in the solution, but for now, I’ve made the clues extremely minimal. I think I’ll just stick with this and add hints as we go, though this is probably enough for a few people:

Word Clues: “Cuyahoga”

Yep, that’s it! Oh, and please don’t go searching in Athens, GA if you are an R.E.M fan…

I’m still mulling over the free-for-all scavengeroogle hunt. The “point system” may prove to be difficult. I guess we could just have arbitrary points, or no points at all, but then what’d be the point? Haha. Give me a little more time to think about it.

So I didn’t see Star Wars this weekend, amazingly… is there anyone else who didn’t see it? I have transformed from a lame geek to a lame geek who doesn’t get out of the house enough. I have to laugh like hell.

Thanks for playing, friends. Twodle-oo…

[Edit: 11:30 PDT - I hope this thing posts at the correct time, it should be around 11:30 PDT now. Hmm… judging from early response I actually doubt you will need a drop for this one. But anyway, in case you are looking in the wrong place here you go: “Nat Park”]

5/20/05 | 10:00 am | The Seahorse

click to search using Google MapsHappy Friday to you all. Hope you had a good week and are about to have a better weekend! This clue comes to us courtesy of Golux13 who submitted it about 2 weeks ago. Yes, I am way behind on clues so if you’ve submitted something sorry but I may be just getting to it now.

Interestingly, I’m starting to get some clue duplication, it was just a matter of time of course… in particular, I’ve got this Native American symbol near Phoenix submitted as a clue 3 times. I think it’s pretty cool, which is why I’m linking to it even though I’m not going to use it.

So, this particular clue looks just like a seahorse… maybe a dried seahorse considering that it’s turned all brown. Or a seahorse fossil? You choose. Whatever it is, I’m hoping that you’ll find it. Golux has mentioned that it is visible at 11/15 and that it maxes out around 14/15 so it’s a fairly large feature. This shot of Mr. Seahorse is at 12/15. I also decided to use the word clues given verbatim and see how we go. Here they are:

“Your own private moon crater”

I didn’t really do much checking on this one, so I guess we will see how tough it is. Herring levels in the atmosphere don’t seem to be too dangerous. But as always, I am often proven wrong! Region drop in a bit… P.S. If you didn’t get to read the post regarding a Real Scavengeroogle Hunt please check it out and comment if it’s something you’d be interested in.

[Edit: 11:45 PDT - I don’t believe most of you would need it, but here is the region clue: Idaho. I think that was probably apparent from the word clue … ]

[Edit: 12:15 PDT - Houston we have a problem … my internet connection has been going up and down (must be the heat wave over here) so I might not be able to update stuff for awhile, including the solution. In any case, have a nice weekend! ]

5/18/05 | 9:00 am | His And Hers Pants

PLEASE READ THIS:

[Edit: (01/15/07) I’ve recently noticed a ton of people coming to this page via search due to news stories and whatnot. This was the original Scavengeroogle site which was the first and most popular scavenger hunt game using google maps when they were first launched. It became quite famous (profiled on Wired and G4), but I stopped updating about a year ago because I simply had no time to keep writing up and moderating clues … I don’t upkeep this site anymore, but can see all of the incoming traffic in my stats.

In any case, I believe if you came here from Google Search, you are probably looking for another blog or site that has been on the news. I have noticed in this particular post that someone with the same name as the person(s) that you are most likely looking for had posted comments (I’m not writing down their names here again because I’d like google to stop sending so much unrelated traffic). I believe this is just a massive coincidence, since a reverse IP lookup on the commenter’s location shows it coming from DALLAS. Yes, Dallas and not Missouri.

So, thank you for stopping by: but I don’t believe this site is the one you are looking for. I have actually disabled all the comments on this page, because there is just too much incoming traffic - hopefully, that will propagate through google search in the next couple days. Best Regards, Bryan (Scavengeroogle Admin).]

click to search using Google MapsAloha. I have been wanting to run this clue for some time now, because I came up with what I thought was a clever title for it. This clue was submitted by Michael J. and i’ve called it “His and Hers Pants”. Cool, huh? I also called it that because I really like this lo-fi indiepop band called Pants Yell! (exclamation point is part of the name) so the word pants was on my mind.

This clue is actually extremely visible at 11/15, so I’m assuming this will be cake for a lot of people. And the “re-find” I attempted was really fast. I just really liked the way this clue looks, so if it’s easy then it’s easy. What can ya do?

By the way, I’m getting a lot of clue submission for Planes and Plane Shadows. In general, I try to stay away from anything to do with planes because although they look really cool, nearly all of them have already been spotted on the various google map sightseeing places. So, unless you can prove to me without a doubt that the plane you found has not been recorded on the various sites already, I probably won’t use it. Not that I don’t applaud your effort in finding it!

Hmm.. word clues for this one. I had a really tough time with this. The line between easy and hard was never so blurred.

“Trail where they cried ended SE of here”

I ended up changing the ones that Michael sent in… not sure if this will make them a little more difficult or a little harder. So wait for the region clue if you’re choking on herring. OK see you in a bit; I need to get back to waiting in line for Star Wars…

[Edit: 9:43 PDT - Agh. Sorry, there was no image! My auto-publish thingy screwed up and I didn’t get to check until just now. Anyhow, the correct pic should be there…]

[Edit: 10:42 PDT - Not sure how much this helps, but the region clue = Oklahoma]

[Edit: 12:00 PDT - I’m not sure but this seems to be tough… I gotta go out for awhile so I’ll leave a clue for the meantime: Cherokee]

[Edit: 1:09 PDT - Arghhh… all right last hint: Cherokee is NOT a city. Well, it is but going in that direction will herringise you…]

5/16/05 | 9:00 am | Moon Is A Sickle Cell

click to search using Google MapsHowdy. How’s your morning. Lunchtime for you eastcoasters. Anyhow, JCP sent me this clue which looks sort of like a building shaped like a crescent moon. (Extra Magic Bonus points to tell me what the reference of the title is.) This one may be a tough find because it is visible only at 14/15 and above. But you never know how the day’s game will turn out!

Well, I did a “re-find” on it, and it took me only 10 minutes if I knew the answer. I think the general location will help, and if you get the specific location it should be fast. However, I think the potential for herring banana peels is there so tread with caution. I decided to go with JCP’s suggestion for word clue nearly verbatim and see how it went from there:

“Mr. Packer would love to dine here, see you”

I’ve tacked on the two words at the end. Hopefully, that will get you going in the correct direction as opposed to a wild goose chase. I will try drop a region soon if the going is tough early on. And of course your usual clue drops along the way to 2:00 p.m. PDT. Okee dok, let’s Scavengeroogle…

[Edit: 10:46 PDT - There doesn’t seem to be a huge amount o’ confusion, but I’ll drop the region clue now cause I need to go out for a bit. Region: Colorado. That should also clear up the small herring that people have been following.]

5/13/05 | 9:00 am | ET And His Shadow

click to search using Google MapsHow many of you saw the movie E.T. in theatres when it came out? Hmm… I guess I’m showing my age here. All I can say is that the sales of Reese’s Pieces must have skyrocketed after the movie… probably one of the more successful movie product placements in history. Aliens promoting candy instead of trying to take over the earth. What a concept!

Anyhow, Mike Z. has quite the eye for aliens, having sent me this clue that looks suspiciously like our favorite cuddly Extraterrestrial himself moseying along a grassy road. Mike says: “…I’ve got a new one that’s NOT in Texas. I’ve come across a lake that reminds me of a side profile of E.T.: big head, little neck, dumpy body. You sort of have to use your imagination a little.”

I actually had no problem recognizing him. You can even see his shadow on the ground as he moves! Er, moving in the opposite direction that is. Well, what do you expect, he’s a weird and wonky alien with magic powers! One can only wonder if this is the mark of the real ET who has lately come to earth to chastise Drew Barrymore for showing her ta-tas to David Letterman…

Back to business! ET is pretty small, but you can spot him at 13/15. I wouldn’t bet on anything farther out than that.

As for word clues, I was all set to just include Mike’s word clues verbatim for you to tackle. However, I tried attempting a “re-find” on the clue and couldn’t find it. For potential clue submitters: you should ALWAYS try and attempt this. If you are not able to “re-find” your own clue given a general location in satellite mode (say start at a major city), then chances are that it will be too difficult for others! Remember that they won’t even have a general location to start with, let alone a specific one.

So I’m going to add some more to his clue. His first clue was: “Souls of the slain are at the 19th hole”. To that I would like to add “… up the long run”. So your rather long total word clues are:

“Souls of the slain are at the 19th hole, up the long run”

I’m going to try out an idea I got from a suggestion by Jason C the other day. The first clue drop will be a “literal general region” hint, that will have no puns whatsoever in it. It will be something like “West Coast”, “Rocky Mountains”, or even a state (”Texas” comes to mind). Whatever it is, it will NOT be punny and will be straight literal. You can be assured that this clue drop will not have hidden meanings.

I think this will ease some of the frustration about not even knowing what part of the country to look. I know some people actually ENJOY that frustration (… crickets … silence) so I won’t start off with a general region but drop it as the first clue. I will of course drop other clues as time goes on and there are no solutions. However, these other clue drops are NOT guaranteed to be literal. =)

Anyhow, did I mention that you are all kick-ass clue solvers? Well, you are, and thanks for playing along with this insanity of sometimes lame or frustrating clues. Thanks for the feedback as well, that’s how we make the game better…

How are finals? I remember those… just barely. Anyhow, this clue will be open for solutions until 2:00 p.m. PDT today. Oh, P.S. Happy friday the thirteenth!

[Edit: 9:52 PDT - I think many are on the right general track, but nevertheless here is your region clue: Louisville, KY]

[Edit: 10:09 PDT - Hey crazy kids who have finals… go study! We’ll still be here next week! =) ]

[Edit: 10:25 PDT - Man. I just tried doing a second “re-find” and it took me 15 minutes. Ok, a second clue to get you closer: try “Souls of the gloriously slain”]

[Edit: 12:33 PDT - I gotta get some lunch. Hmm, I’m don’t think there’s any other clues that can be dropped to help people along. I’ll be back at 1:30…]

5/11/05 | 9:00 am | Angry Clown!

click to search using Google MapsGrr… this clown is very angry. Hehe. Er, I don’t know what else to write about this. Clowns actually scare me, ever since I was a kid. Coulrophobia = Fear of clowns. I kid you not. I googled it.

Anyhow, this clue comes to you from Johnny K. who wrote “…looks like a clown…an ANGRY clown. He’s got a frown. The building in the middle sorta looks like a big nose, and the stuff on the left and right looks like crazy clown hair. The lake looks like it could be some more hair, Krusty the Clown style.”

I like using these types of clues because there is little chance of them appearing on other people’s googlemap sites. Unless they happen to have a category for “Buildings that look like clowns”. Like I said, I really could care less about famous landmarks and locations…

The delicious word clues I shall provide you with are:

“Busted Aero Highway”

Tasty. And yet… Johnny’s original word clue was going to be something absolutely crazy like “Do you want to buy clown insurance?” Life insurance, I suppose, for when the clown tries to come and getcha in the middle of the night.

Mr. Clown is visible at 11/15. Usual time trial until 2:00 p.m. PDT today. I may need to skip tomorrow (Thurs) but will definitely have something up on Friday to look at. Keep an eye on the clue launch at top of page. Now quit clowning around and get to work. Ah, you saw that coming…

5/9/05 | 9:01 am | Spiral Stairs

click to search using Google Maps

Gah, it is too early to be up this morning. Anyhow, so this clue is called “Spiral Stairs” even though there’s no stairs involved at all. It’s just the first thing I thought of, me being a Pavement fan and all. Yeah, I know they broke up. But I just got the Crooked Rain re-release so it’s been on my mind lately.

Charlie E. is responsible for this green spiral which he sent in more than a week ago. On that note, I just checked and there’s currently a few weeks worth of clues backlogged so if you’ve sent some in be prepared to wait a little bit to see if they go up or not. But thank you again for sending them in, I go through every single one of them.

I actually thought Charlie’s word clues were rather clever, so I’m going to give them to you au naturale, exactly as he wrote them:

“Quit runnin’ yo mouth, Mon”

Anyhow, I tend to meddle too much with the word clues. I’m curious how hard this will be… though it seems to be rather accessible at 11/15. Not sure about herrings for this one. I’m always boggled how the quick Scavengerooglers get it within like 2 minutes or so. I don’t think luck or location has THAT much to do with it because some people repeatedly get the solution quickly… so there must be some pretty good puzzle people out there. I think these clues are starting to bore them! One of these days, if I have time, I’d like to do a 5 or 10 clue all-day Scavengeroogle hunt. Maybe try to figure out a prize or two for the winners. That would be really fun, I wonder if people would be interested in that though? And more importantly whether I’d be able to run it all day…

OK we’ll have our usual 5 hour session until 2:00 p.m. PDT today. Probably no clue drop necessary, but I’ll check back about halfway through. Till later: I need to sleep, I need to sleep, I need to sleep why won’t you, why won’t you let me sleep…

[Edit: 10:25 PDT - Hmm.. nothin’ but crickets. I don’t know if that means no one’s playing today or the clue is too hard! I didn’t get the usual couple of solutions 5 minutes after the starting bell…]

[Edit: 11:25 PDT - Wow. No solutions yet. Hm.. ok, let’s try start with a clue drop of: Horses]

[Edit: 12:31 PDT - I gotta eat some lunch, but here you go: Switching around the order of the words in the word clue may help. Also, this has nothing to do with Montana!]

Salutations, and happy Friday. We just cannot seem to get away from Texas. Scott L. sent in some cool clues, among them this neat looking building that resembles a baby’s rattle. Quite visible recognizable from as far out as 12/15. Scott is also one of the few to actually do some hard thinking on what kind of word clues would be appropriate and send in his ideas. That’s very much appreciated, in case I haven’t mentioned it! I’ve taken some of the suggestions he had and combined them in usual Scavengeroogle fashion to leave you with:

“Stonewall, left of Fate”

Note that this is a combination of his ideas; I fear I may have scavengeroogled them into oblivion. Hopefully, this won’t turn into a hair pulling fest again. I am going to be ready to drop clues furiously in case of that, but I’m thinking that there’s a chance I won’t need to. There’s really no way to predict it; the clues I think are too hard are too easy and vice versa. That’s life!

Actually, here is one hint up-front: Don’t jump too quickly to conclusions with this clue, or you might find yourself up to your necks in herring!

Okay, you’ve got until 2:00 p.m. PDT today or so. I’ll be checking in every so often… On your mark, get set, Scavengeroogle!

Top of the Cinco De Mayo and Boys Day to ya. Is today really 5/5/5? Yes. Interesting. Angie S. sent in a bunch of clues and I settled on this one for your Scavengeroogling pleasure today. This is an interesting set of paths that outlines a bell shape. Viewable at about 12/15 if you squint, but more like 13/15.

I decided not to get all windbaggy today and write the usual essay. Instead, I’ll just give you the word clue. Uh, here:

“Corn Prince House”

Potential 2nd clue-drop around 11:30. This will run until 2:00 p.m. PDT today or until all hell breaks loose on the clue like yesterday, whichever comes first. OK: Repent, Scavengeroogles! Said the Ticktockman…

5/4/05 | 9:00 am | You Sank My Battleships!

click to search using Google Maps

Ahoy. I don’t think these are battleships or even military ships. Nor are they sunken. But they do look unused at the moment. Full disclaimer: I am not 100% sure if this clue has already been “found” elsewhere in the google maposphere. So if it has been documented, you guys/gals are going to have an easy day today!

This clue comes from Hunter A. who submitted it along with the title “Ghost Ships”. I have a feeling that even if this clue hasn’t been documented in the usual “google sightseeing” places it is still going to be easier because it is visible at an amazing 9/15, and maybe even farther out at 8/15.

Your clue:

“James R. the Tormentor”

What?? Yeah. Oh, by the way. I think people’s first instinct when getting a clue is to either type the entire word clue into google maps or into google itself. This is fine, but I would suggest against it because I usually try as hard as I can to make sure that will not bring up the correct result. Occasionally it happens, but I try checking usually.

It IS often profitable, however, to take apart the word clue into pieces and google them. Or transmute them into homonyms, synonyms, onomatopoeia and then google them. This can also lead to numerous bloody herrings, though so be careful. =)

I think I may end it a little earlier at 1:00 p.m. PDT today, but I’m not sure yet. I definitely will if too many people get the solution too fast. OK, all hands on deck. Avast! And all that other sea captainy nonsense…

P.S. You might note that now near the top of the page there should be a note telling you when the next clue is probably going to launch. This can be helpful for those trying to plan their day around Scavengeroogle sessions!

5/3/05 | 9:00 am | Bones Brigade

click to search using Google Maps

No, I don’t know as much about skateboards as a few of my friends thought I did. I was a real poser. I had a skateboard but couldn’t skate. But I knew about the Bones Brigade, which is the name of this clue. Brian N. sent this clue in which is a building shaped like a gray bone. Neat! Woof!

It’s visible from quite far out, though 12/15 is pushing it a bit. I think it’s possible that it’s a recognizable building for locals. If you happen to live in the area and you know the clue already, could you let us know what this building is? I’ll post it up afterwards.

So to the word clue that Brian was going to give you. It actually took me awhile to completely put together what he was getting at. I guess I could have asked for clarification, but I wanted to figure it out on my own. Duh… I am the mental supersloth.

Anyhow, I think I will modify the clue a bit to make it a little easier:

“Sandy Waffle, Take 5″

Ugh, I’m so irresponsible when it comes to word clues. I’m like the word clue gremlin; it’s possible I might have made it even worse through unknown pickled herrings. As such, look for frequent apologies and clue drops along the way…

You’ve got until 2:00 p.m. PDT today. I think I will stick with one clue a day for now, but I am also thinking that maybe Fridays will be Fun Double Clue Day! Plus, a lot of you seem to have Fridays free (for the college kids). Ok, bang a gong, we are on…

[Edit: 10:18 PDT - I’ve actually got to go somewhere until about 1:30, so you get a second clue drop early. Actually, here are 2 for good measure: “Take 5″ is not music related. And: waffle commercials. Oh, I won’t be able to update solutions pending so don’t worry if you don’t see the number go up.]
