11/16/05 | 10:32 am | Crossbones

click to search using Google MapsYo ho ho, and a bottle of rum. My favorite ride at Disneyland in California when I was a kid was Pirates of the Caribbean where you’d float on this boat through a bunch of politically incorrect animatronic pirates. One of the things I remember is that before your boat goes down this waterslide into the dark, there’s like this Skull and Crossbones talking at you.

Roogler Bernd seems to have found a pretty good likeness of the crossbones in these buildings. It’s fairly large, but because it blends in sort of with the background I wouldn’t look for it at anything farther up than 15/18 unless you’ve got extremely sharp eyes.

I think the word hints Bernd sent in have something to do w/ sports which is not my forte, so I’ve come up with a new hint that may or may not be too simple. At this point, my brain is a little too fuzzy to care, so here you go:

“Mmm Mmm Good”

And now, it’s back to this cup of coffee which is the only thing keeping me from falling asleep at the keyboard. I’ll let the clue run till Thursday night or so. So what’s everyone’s plans for Turkey Day? I have decided to take on the scary job of cooking the turkey! A passing of the torch, if you will, since my parents have done it for the last 30 something years… I’m not sure if we’ll have a clue next week due to everyone being on holiday but we’ll see!

[Edit: Wed 5:23 pm PST - A wee hint before I head off to eat. This is NOT in California…]

[Edit: Thu 8:29 am PST - We’re doin’ pretty well, I think this clue might have been too easy for some… also, Bernd tells me that his original word hint had nothing to do w/ sports so perhaps I should have used that instead. I’ll give it in the solution.]

11/7/05 | 10:20 pm | Mercury Space Capsule

click to search using Google MapsHow’s it goin’ Rooglers! Me, I’ve been better. Been dealing with this bruised rib of mine that still feels like it’s broken or something. People ask me, “How’s your ribs?” and I feel like I’m at Tony Roma’s. A-ha ha.

Whew, anyway after last week’s tougher clue, I’m jonesing for an easier one. To get to the point, this clue which looks like a space capsule was sent in by another mysterioso person named “Muddyboots”. It’s sort of funny when people send in submissions under weird names, but it does make it easier keeping track of all of you!

Muddy said that it reminded him/her of the Mercury Space Capsule so that’s the name of this clue. It’s pretty well visible, so I’m thinking this will be easy to spot even though the magnification requried is 15/18.

And now, the moment of truth. Make-or-break time for the clue. I think this one will be a little easier. Maybe even easy-peasy:

“Belt Weigh”

Truthfully, I am out of practice making up word hints. There were some word hints sent in with the clue, but I wouldn’t be the Scavengeroogle Admin if I didn’t stupidly throw them out like I am right now. Region drop may be possible with this one. Huh, what’s that? Newer players may not even remember that we sometimes give out the general area as a 2nd hint after some time has passed. I haven’t given one out in a long time, because I haven’t had to. We shall see I guess…

[Edit: 10:20 pm PST Mon - Oops I hit “publish” instead of “save”. I guess you’ll be getting the clue a little early…]

11/1/05 | 1:39 pm | Lisa Simpson

click to search using Google MapsHappy post-Halloween to you all! We received not ONE trick or treater to our house Monday night. Weird, has the allure of free candy been lost on today’s youth? Well, more candy bars for me.

Anyhow, I’ve wanted to use this clue sent in by Ananth R. for about a month now, but just got around to it now. Ananth did a bang-up job providing multiple angles on the word hints too, so it’s time we brought it out. Ananth says the clue sort of looks like the “invincibility star” from Super Mario Bros.. I thought so too, but when I first saw it I only thought one thing: Lisa Simpson! Someone seems to have made a shrine to our favourite saxophone playing environmentalist do-gooder.

Lisa Simpson can be seen reasonably well at 14/18 magnification. As for word hints, as I said Ananth had more than a few well thought out ones. Here is one of them:

“No idea? Come and teach gymnastics”

Man, I really like this pun, er… one. After last week’s easier clue, I think I will leave it at that for now and see if any solutions come in first. We haven’t had a region drop for a clue in awhile, they haven’t really been necessary. I’m not sure if I’ll be ABLE to give a region drop for this one though without giving it away. I guess we will see!

(By the way, if I haven’t used your clue(s) that you sent in sorry about that. It has something to do with me being the pickiest sonofabitch about these clues. A big thank you to those who send in clues though, whether they are used or not.)

[Edit: 9:55 am PST Wed - This one seems to be a toughie, so I’m going to start off additional hints by saying the clue is International. Also, remember that at Scavengeroogle as a rule we pretty much like to stick with areas that are mapped in Hi-Res…]

10/25/05 | 12:02 am | Bullseye Triangle

click to search using Google MapsWow. Yes I’m writing here again. Scavengeroogle is back, at least for now. I bet you all thought that I’d hiked into the Sierra Nevadas never to return.

Truthfully, the combination of a vacation in Mammoth and a refrigerator at home that decided to stop working over that vacation conspired to stop me from working on Scavengeroogle for the past two weeks or so. Have you ever had to figure out what to do with 15 pounds of rotten meat? Fun. Anyhow, I finally got a fridge (I’ve discovered that it’s very, very difficult to live without a fridge!) yesterday so I can continue putting out clues now. I dunno if anyone is still checking this site, but if you are… hello!

I’m fairly certain that this geometric shape of what looks like a bullseye inside of a triangle has already been found on any number of googlemap sites, but I decided to post it up anyhow. Might be good to ease back into Rooglin’ with an easier clue. This one comes from Jan and she (he?) had also sent in a whole bunch of word hints along with it. Guess what? I’m not using any of them. Because I’m just idiotic about word hints as usual. The bullseye triangle is visible at 14/18, this thing is quite large. For hints:

“Corn Creek”

Shouldn’t be too bad. This’ll be a two day clue again as I struggle to get back into the swing of things. Oh, I forgot to mention that I went fishing in a snow blizzard near Yosemite. Quite fun, if you forget about the frostbite…

[Edit: 10:16 am Tues - I knew this one would be easy and that I had seen it elsewhere (as had many of you), and that seems to be the case judging on the write-ins. But anyhow, thank you all again for playing! I’m still a bit amazed that people are patient enough to check in with the site every so often after being inactive for 2 weeks.]

10/11/05 | 2:16 pm | Backwards S

click to search using Google MapsI have been slacking when it comes to clues and bounties, sorry. I decided to launch this one now rather than wait until tomorrow, so this’ll be a day and half long clue.

This interesting looking building is shaped just like a “Backwards S”. Or if you’re feeling imaginative it could be a worm or caterpillar. This is the point in the story where I tell you all about my friend in high school who had a rather disturbing experience regarding worms and a certain Mr. Goodbar. Oh, The Horror - I’ll stop right there.

The Backwards S was submitted by Dan M quite awhile back but I decided not to use it now. It’s quite visible at 15/18. Dan had some word hints that I thought were OK but they seemed sort of difficult as you had to make numerous connections. So I’ve modified them. It is interesting to me how people come up with word hints; I have had these truly amazing hints submitted for clues that I haven’t used because no matter how wonderful and convoluted they are, there’s no way that most people would be able to solve it.

It’s sort of weird, when coming up with word hints you really have to think “how MOST people will think” with a big emphasis on the word MOST. We’re shooting for averages here, and having only 1 person solve it is pretty much no good (and actually should be reserved for bounties). On the other hand, making it too easy and having 50 solutions will get boring really quick. It’s darn difficult, and in fact for me it’s definitely the most difficult part of the game. And on the flip side, I often tend to make the clues WORSE by trying to fix them. I just can’t seem to leave well enough alone. At the end of the day, though, I guess it’s just a game…

Well, enough chitchat. The word hints are:

“We Got Trouble with O’Leary”

See you soon…

[Edit: 11:15 pm PDT Tue - Whoops sorry, I just realized I hadn’t updated here all day. I have taken up playing tennis at night, yep the real kind where you physically run around and hit the ball. I decided I needed more exercise. So far, it is rough going especially with me being only 5 foot 4 inches tall. I need to learn how to spin serve, I think, or whatever that is called. Oh, so we are doing OK with this clue for now so I won’t drop a region for now…]

[Edit: 9:30 am PDT Wed - Hello fellows. And fellowettes. Good number of solutions coming in, with most Rooglers getting it in less than 5 minutes. 10/5/05 | 12:01 am | Turquoise Turtle

click to search using Google MapsGabba gabba hey. And all of that jazz. You are, of course, looking for this week’s daily clue. Ah yeah, I find it kind of funny that I’ve given them the name “Daily clue” when they are not every day an as of a little while ago take two days instead of one. Oh wells.

But anyhow, here you have a Turquoise Turtle clue for your Roogling pleasure. The mysteriously named Artvandalay was the person who sent in this clue… isn’t that some sort of Seinfeld reference? All I know is my friend who loved Seinfeld used to sign into instant messenger with that handle. The turtle has his head to the southwest and is composed of what looks like a cluster of blue buildings. Hm… I guess Super Magic Crunchy Bonus Points are in effect - what exactly are those buildings? They are available at 15/18, by the way.

Ok, off you go on your scavenger hunt. Oh wait, the word hints. Uh, uhm…

“Lyons and Tigers, Oh Mi”

I have completely stitched up the word hints in the usual evil herringbone way. This is a 2 day clue again, so I’ll check in from time to time… probably drop hints along the way.

Say, anyone know good non-prescription drug remedies for better sleep? Like Kava-Kava and that kinda stuff. I have been having problems getting continuous sleep lately but I don’t want to take anything that’ll put me out of commission the next day. Also, I didn’t want to drink any al-key-hol - though I know that definitely works on me! =)

[Edit: 10:03 am PDT Wed - Good morning everyone (or afternoon for some). Seem to be doing OK with this clue for now. I will just say that there are herrings to be waded through for this clue, but you are probably on the right track if you press on and go through all of them.]

[Edit: 11:00 pm PDT Wed - Hi there, or good evening. There were a good amount of solutions. However, I know quite a few rooglers were tearing their hair out at the multiplicity of herrings so I thusly will attempt to eliminate a few. In lieu of a region hint, here is a negative-region hint: Not in Ohio. I knew that some would try there because of “Oh”. That is correct, the turtle is not in Ohio. Hope that helps, see you tomorrow!]

[Edit: 1:45 pm PDT Thu - Not much to report today. Except this - I just discovered that last week a 90 million dollar California lottery ticket was purchased at a 7-11 that I go to some of the time, very close to my house. *Kicks Self For Not Buying Lottery Ticket This Past Week*]

9/12/05 | 12:01 am | Alien Antenna

click to search using Google MapsWelcome to another fun filled (well, sometimes) week at Scavengeroogle. Sorry I completely missed out on a daily clue last week. Although, I did manage to put up some bounties that haven’t been solved yet. I have been mired in this and that and the daily problems of my windoze PC box. Which is finally up and running again! But not before I’d gotten very used to using this Powerbook.

Also, regarding the old unsolved Compass bounty, here is an additional clue: Southeast U.S.. I know many have become disgusted with this one so we’ll try get it solved in the next couple weeks by dropping clues.

As to today’s clue, Jerry R sent in this series of roads(?) that sort of looks like an Alien Antenna. This is actually a rather large clue, though it doesn’t seem like it from the picture. You can see it from as far out as 12/18. Other than the fact that it’s extremely large, it may prove to be difficult. One reason is that there are not a lot of identifying marks on the pic.

The other reason, is that I didn’t feel like coming up with word hints, so I’ve used Jerry’s directly as they are. That wouldn’t be a problem, except that I don’t completely understand how they relate to the clue myself! Anyhow, we’ll see how it goes for you… expect some clue drops or regions as we go if it proves too hard:

“West of where Joktan’s son picks Sego Lilies”

I should be around today, so I’ll be able to update. Thanks for roogling…

[Edit: 9:39 am PDT Mon - I started doing something last night after I setup the clue so I completely forgot I scheduled it for today! Anyhow, Jerry wrote in to say he misspelled something in the word hint which I’ve corrected. But I guess that wasn’t a game breaker for many of you… We’re doing OK for now, so region drop is only going to be: United States]

[Edit: 8:35 pm PDT Mon - Soooo… you may have heard that Los Angeles had a major power outage today. Well, guess where my hosting provider is located? Thusly, I have only now been able to get onto this site. Email is still down. Thus, I am extending this clue until tomorrow sometime. I don’t want to deal with trying to write something up now, plus I won’t be able to tell who has submitted solutions. So, more tomorrow…]

[Edit: 10:13 am PDT Tues - I seem to have gotten my mail back up… I’m not sure if my email was bouncing so I may or may not have gotten all the solutions. Anyhow, thanks for sticking with it even though the site was down. This is kind of interesting to have a 2 day long “daily clue”. More updates later - I don’t expect a huge amount of solutions for this one but that’s ok because of the downtime…]

[Edit: 4:00 pm PDT Tues - We seem to be doing OK so I’ll won’t drop any more hints for now. In addition, some solvers actually appreciated the 2 day long open time for the daily clue… hmm, I might look at making it 2 days instead of a single day. Seems like it’ll give more time to everyone, and we’ll get more solutions and more interaction among the rooglers!]

8/24/05 | 12:01 am | Peacock Gardens

click to search using Google MapsGood morning (or night for you insomniacs). I’m writing this clue up from my parents’ house right now. My PC is still on the blink which is the reason for that. Getting used to the software in our Powerbook though, in case I lose my PC again. I’ve been a bit down in the mouth for scavenger hunts out lately, but maybe I’ll get more inspired with this whole back to school thing.

Anyhow, this clue from Brian Z is of a pretty cool looking “peacock”… I think they are gardens which is why I’ve named the clue Peacock Gardens. Imaginative, to say the least. What it also reminded me of was the Spirograph drawing toy, though I don’t suppose many remember that. I had a crapload of the wheels and everything…

I have a feeling this is one of those clues where it’s either extremely simple extremely difficult depending on where you start. Wait, that’s how ALL of our clues are. But I really am at a loss to make up some word hints, so I’ll provide a variation of Brian Z’s:

“Curvy Tigress”

Yup, that’s all you get. Oh, also the peacock gardens are also viewable at 15/18. I will be dropping a region clue hopefully. I’ve been working out of my parent’s house during the day lately (would you believe I’m painting their fricken house) so I’ll try see if I can’t take some breaks to check in once in awhile.

[Edit: 9:45 am PDT - Well, looks like the clue is going OK. I am actually on the Powerbook again, probably not painting my parents house today and thus will be able to update periodically. Let me start off with a general region (which is probably apparent to a lot of people already even if they haven’t found the clue): Middle East.]

[Edit: 12:18 pm PDT - I’ll be out for about 4-5 hours but will check back around dinner. Looks like we won’t need more clues drops for today… see ya all soon.]

7/25/05 | 12:01 am | Sea Snake

click to search using Google MapsHey. Welcome to another wild week at Scavengeroogle. Yes, I will be working on getting more bounties up soon. And thank you for your submissions, whether I use them or not…

Anyhow, this clue comes from the slightly mysterious Kilovh (is that kilovolt-hours?) . He has named it “Sea Snake” because it is some sort of green path that resembles the curls of a snake (the head is at the bottom). The contrast on this is kinda dim so you may have to squint a bit. I thought that nearly as interesting as the snake feature was the prominent geometric circular pattern near the top though.

You might notice this clue pic is rotated, I decided to make it variable… because sometimes the pieces I’d like to show are easier to show when the picture is vertical.

The sea snake is visible from about 15/18 out, possibly at 14/18. So… the infamous and dangerous word clues (courtesy of Kilovh):

“Olive Plum Place”

And no… nothing to do with Melrose Place. Yeah, I know you watched that show.

We haven’t done region drops in awhile… I think due in some part because we’ve gotten closer to our pursuit of the perfect AVERAGE clue. But anyway, I always check in at least once a day during the clue duration. So if it comes to it, I’ll let fly with one. Have fun ‘roogling!

[Edit: 9:30 am PDT - I am bit stunned that no one has solved this one… at first I was wondering if it had actually “launched” or not. Maybe I should have made it a “bounty”! Well, let’s start off regioning by announcing that this is NOT in the US…]

[Edit: 11:52 am PDT - Hm.. very weird. I think my email may have been on the blink for the past 1/2 day or so. So if you sent in the solution to the clue earlier (Mark L, Mike B: I got yours), could you please send it again? This might explain the lack of solutions.]

7/14/05 | 12:01 am | Ninja Star

click to search using Google MapsHi folks, here’s your clue today. First a note: I will most likely be out nearly all day and night, so I won’t get to update anything after I leave, sometime in the morning. So play nice…

Here is another backlogged clue from ‘roogler Mike M., a cool depiction of what looks almost like a ninja star. When I was a kid, we’d go to the swap meet and invariably there’d be a couple people selling stuff like that along with nunchucks and butterfly knives. Would you believe that they actually let us BUY them without parental consent? This was in the 70s though. Looking back on it, that’s pretty strange that an 8 year old kid was able to buy that stuff. The items weren’t that sharp, but still…

Anyhow, I’m going to give you Mike M.’s word clue that I modified a bit. The star is visible from about 14/18 or so. Also, I am not 100% certain this clue has not been discussed on other Google sites. So if you don’t want to spoil the fun, don’t look right away. Like I said I am not sure about it. Here you go:

“When in Rome, do as the Standing Stone People do”

Since I won’t be able to update nearly all day, I hope this won’t be too hard. I must say right off the back to watch out for a multitude of herrings flopping around… I have noted at least 2 direct herrings.

[Edit: 9:22 am PDT - Wow, I see a lot of new faces in the solutions coming in… cool! If you’re just surfing in and new to the game, remember I post everyone’s name at the END of the day’s game. Also, make sure to use the “solve a clue” form instead of leaving a comment - I won’t post your comment if it contains the solution! 7/11/05 | 12:01 am | Nineteen

click to search using Google MapsAh… coffee. So anyhow, how are you doing? I went through some of my email box and found a slew of clue submissions that had found their way into an older email folder of mine. Well, more like a few clues. But anyhow, you do remember the old Paul Hardcastle song from 80s called “Nineteen”, don’t you? Yeah, the one where he’s all: “N-n-n-n-nineteen, nineteen”. Yeah, just play along here.

Well, this cool roman numeral nineteen was sent in by Brian G. and immediately reminded me of that song. The buildings that make up the numeral are pretty well defined, really nice actually. It is visible from pretty far out at 14/18.

I actually thought about Brian’s word clues and decided to change them slightly. Horrors all around! Well, now that we have an all day thing going, I think there’s a little more leeway in experimenting with the word clues. Because I can correct them later in the day if they are too difficult. If they’re too easy though, there’s no going back. =) Anyhow, let’s try this for size:

“The Indian’s Bed”

I want to see how hard that will be to find. Don’t panic if you don’t have any idea. I’ll drop more stuff soon.

What are you all doing for summer vacation by the way? Is anyone going (or have gone) on cool trips to neat places featured in Google Maps? I had to sort of cancel my usual week long summer trip this year. Budget cuts. You know how that goes…

7/7/05 | 12:01 am | Exclamation Point

click to search using Google MapsHello, what’s this? A clue on a THURSDAY?! You bet your Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans… Sorry, a Potter lapse.

Anyhow, we are back and in full experimentation mode. That is, this clue is open all day long today. You’ll note that it was auto-launched (at least it should have been) at midnight. So, if you suffer from insomnia, mosey on over once in awhile and you might find some Scavengerooglin’ awaitin’ you. Well, anyhow I will try and set it so it launches early from now on (especially for you east coasters). But there may be times I’ll just launch a clue up in the middle of the day too!

Also remember, if you’re solving a clue at 3 in the morning I’m most likely asleep so I won’t update the “Pending Solutions”. On that note, I’ll try check in every so often and update the Pending Solutions, but if you don’t see the number change after submitting don’t worry.

OK, as to the clue! This looks somewhat like an Exclamation Point lying on its side and was sent in by Dan M. awhile back. Hmm.. we do like our punctuation, don’t we. Interestingly, I just bought the Schoolhouse Rock DVD which contains the superfun jingle “Interjection!”. So you can say that exclamations were on my mind. Catchy buggers, those songs. (If you’re not over 25 you probably don’t remember them from Saturday morning cartoons).

The exclamation point is visible at about 15/18. I actually thought it was kinda funny that the reddish buildings sort of form the letters “H” and “I”, with the “I” lying on its side. So the clue is sort of a “HI!” Lots and lots of laughs…

Your word clues, should you choose to accept them, are:

“I wouldn’t. How about Glen?”

and are straight from Dan’s submission. OK, get to it. I am trying to decide exactly when a region will be dropped. I am thinking that it will be on a clue by clue basis to start with. That is, if there are no solutions at all, I’ll drop it right away whenever I get to the computer. But if there are some rolling in then we’ll wait, or not drop anything at all!
